nvidia drivers won't run

Mint 18.1 is randomly freezing and locking up on me, requiring a hard reboot, which seemed to start after i reverted to the nouveau drivers from originally using the proprietary drivers, so I wanted to switch back to the proprietary nvidia drivers to see if that was the problem. Now, however, Mint won't load the nvidia drivers, but keeps loading nouveau -- even after installing nvidia with the driver manager, and even after uninstalling nouveau! Does anyone have any ideas of how exactly Mint is running nouveau drivers when they've been removed, or how to get proprietary drivers to work when by all appearances they've been installed and nouveau removed?

You don't separate package names with a '-' but a space ' ' in apt-get.

Each command entry contains only one individual package, e.g., xserver-xorg-video-nouveau = 1 package, not multiple packages.

Oh yes, my bad. How are you proving you are still running with these uninstalled drivers?

Removing the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau will remove the nouveau driver module (nouveau_drv.so), but not the kernel module (nouveau.ko), which is built during the driver installation. The lsmod command lists loaded kernel modules. The Nvidia kernel module and driver module will be prevented from loading as long as the nouveau kernel module is loaded.
You're probably using the modesetting driver now, which can be checked by using this command:

You're probably using the modesetting driver now, which can be checked by using this command:

Thanks for that explanation, roblm. I ran the command you suggested, output below. I've already tried updating initramfs with no change, but didn't check to see if there was an nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf.

My pc was locked up again this morning requiring hard reboot, so it might not even be a video driver problem but some other issue. I'm going to try the nvidia drivers once more with nouveau blacklisted in the modprobe.d .conf file, and if that doesn't work I might just reinstall Mint. I have been having hard drive issues, with one older IDE drive having gone bad, and I was also trying to change the min freq in cpufrequtils, which might have caused something to malfunction. In the meantime, if anyone sees anything fixable from the log output, please let me know.

The output from the log file shows the nouveau driver is loaded. Look for a group of lines with the name of the graphics driver followed by (0).

The xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package was probably not actually removed. You could check that by opening the Synaptic Package Manager and searching for it. This line shows the nouveau driver module is still present, but it should have been removed:

I just checked with my PC that I use for testing, which has a dual-boot with Mint 18.1 Cinnamon and MATE. Removing the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package in both resulted in removal of nouveau_drv.so and then the Xorg.0.log files showed the modesetting driver loaded:

Ok, through some means I was able to get nvidia to run, possibly by blacklisting nouveau in blacklist.conf. Unfortunately, the video performance SUCKED, with choppy, laggy, tearing video that was out of sync, crappy performance in glmark2 (139??), and slow framerates in chromium-bsu, which I use to test performance. In fact, when first starting chromium-bsu with nvidia drivers, the game is stuttering and slow like glue with FPS around 10-20, and then after about 15 seconds it kicks in with fairly normal-feeling play but framerates never getting above 20. With nouveau drivers, it starts at correct speeds immediately, with FPS 50+.

On the plus side, my PC didn't lock up with nvidia, but that's not enough to make up for the poor performance in all other areas. Also of note, I think, is that nvidia-settings doesn't run normally, with all the options, but only shows the first two (forgot the exact error message). But something is seriously malfunctioning on my system at least with nvidia drivers. I also tried an earlier version and current, same results.

I've reinstalled nouveau, and turned off some things that might have been causing lockups (xfce4 weather plugin, etc.), so I'll see how it goes. If it locks up again, I'm going to try a clean debian stable install and see if it works there for reference. If that also locks up, I'll have to conclude the nouveau drivers are buggy with my card and try to find the source of the problem to make a report. If not, I'll reinstall Mint from scratch and see if I can get it work on a fresh install. It's still possible the problem is elsewhere, but we'll see.

When you see an almost empty nvidia-settings, it means there was a misconfiguration in the Nvidia driver installation. I would have liked to have seen the output of cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | egrep -i "nvidia|nouveau|modeset" to see what driver was loaded.

You're exactly right, there was a huge misconfiguration somehow. Just remembered also that in chromium-bsu, my cpu was ramping ~75% with nvidia, while it's fine at 10-15% without.

Now Xorg shows that neither nvidia nor nouveau are loaded, so I guess it's the modeset that's driving the card. I have no idea why these modules are failing to be built or loaded properly, so I might just have to get a fresh start where I can pay attention from scratch to what's going on. [Edit: synaptic said that nouveau was not installed, so i installed it there instead of with apt-get and now it shows up in Xorg log. Now I'll just monitor it (no pun intended ;-)) to see if it locks up.
Edit2: with all this testing, i'm starting to get addicted to chromium-bsu :D ]

If you decide to re-install the Nvidia driver again, then use the cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | egrep -i "nvidia|nouveau|modeset" command to check that the Nvidia driver is loading. If not, then use this command to check if the Nvidia kernel module was built:

You should see nvidia_367.ko and 1 or more of these 3 modules: nvidia_367_drm.ko, nvidia_367_modeset.ko, and nvidia_367_uvm.ko

If that looks Ok, then use this command to check for the nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file:
