I just booted up (from the hanged up screen, after restarting from the live usb) from the hard drive, and looked into the new Xorg.0.log, which I am posting here in case it is useful:

Here is some confusion. The last log file shows this warning line:

But later these lines show the EDID is being used. The EDID vendor "LNX" info and that particular Modeline is listed in that EDID. I think LNX refers to Linux.

Go into the BIOS and look for a Video Memory Size setting under the Video section. Set it to the highest value, which should be at least 8 MB or more.

Hi, I tried to change the video size in the BIOS, but the only option is to activate LCD / CRT. Selected LCD only. No entry to change the video size ...
If I selected off the silent boot (to see the post mesages) it reads among other things : system BIOS shadowed, and video BIOS shadowed (but no message about video size)
After changing the xorg,conf and adding the line to grub (and updated it) so it reads now:

I rebooted and still get the hang up blank screen. After a hard power off, rebooted and got the right screen resolution as before.

Test using these parameters in the kernel command line, one at a time, but first remove the others:

Ok, First placed the i915.modeset=0 in grub file

, updated grub. Deleted also the xorg.conf file to see the effect. After reboot, got a screen with small resolution, but this time the 640x480 screen is centered, instead of being in the upper left corner.

I continued this topic using Private Messages, so other users would not have to read through many pages of many posts. The solution found was to use only this parameter on the kernel command-line: vga=792

No xorg.conf file was needed.
