/home/$USER
counts. I have an NVidia 980Ti, and the proprietary drivers from the "Hardware" settings menu didn't work well for me, so I went to their website and used the weird compressed script installer thingy. Everything's fine as far as the display (actually, I have one 4k monitor and one 1080p and the scaling is hard to get right; I messed with xrandr
for a bit to disastrous effect but that's a different story), but the windows won't hold focus. Basically, from login everything's okay, but if I open up too many windows - or I've noticed it particularly hates when applications spawn "sub-windows" or whatever they're called - I get keyboard focus on a window, but I can't click on anything. I haven't worked out any kind of pattern to it, but there's usually a window that holds mouse focus for whatever reason, and if I have other windows on top of that one, my clicks will go right through them and interact with the window I can't even see (this happens with those "sub-windows" and other applications). To make matters worse, this means I can't move windows when one of them holds focus. I've also noticed that when I switch workspaces the Desktop has focus. Like, if I push the Super key, the Menu will open, but if I type anything no text appears and instead it highlights desktop icons that match what I'm typing. Clicking on the Menu when this happens just causes the clicks to go through and hit any icons beneath it. The panel also can't be clicked, not the pinned applets, not the "Menu" button, and nothing in the system tray. Also possibly related: the default keys for Expo and Scale weren't working, so I added the custom shortcuts Shift+Super+Up and Shift+Super+Down to them respectively. That didn't work, so I'm thinking the issue isn't with the keys, just with Cinnamon and window focus and junk.
I could probably take a video if that would help clarify, but I'm not sure how to do that, or if I can without installing something (which I'll do if you tell me what), but I'm worried that the focus stuff itself may mess with taking a video. I like to think I'm fairly competent with the terminal, but I'm not familiar at all with customizing Gnome or Cinnamon, so I can get you any information you think'll help I just don't know what/where that is. So far I've managed to get around by just Alt-TAB-ing and TAB-ing through window controls, but that's nigh on impossible for certain websites. I don't know why Alt-TAB works but Expo and Scale don't.
Oh, and btw, my window focus mode is set to "Click" (but like I said clicking just ghosts through). I've messed with the focus settings quite a bit, but I'll post the current settings in a screenshot in a second (I'm typing this on my laptop because of how aggravating this window thing is)
Clarification: By "too many windows" I mean usually 2 is fine and around 3 breaks it (I think it depends on whether I open the Menu, which seems to be related)
EDIT: Not sure if related, but I've noticed that the
cinnamon --replace
process is taking up nearly 4GB of system memory, while looking glass reports only a few hundred MB.UPDATE: I'm convinced there's a memory leak somewhere, because
cinnamon --replace
is now taking up over 10GB of system memory. Which is a problem because I only have 8GB of RAM. Also, here's that screenshot I promised youhttps://s17.postimg.org/ezrw5asm7/Scree ... -47-54.png
