Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by lucasolorin »

I am using Mint 18.1 Serena/Win10 dual boot on my Lenovo Thinkpad L560 laptop. I tried connecting to an external monitor using a VGA cable but it is not detected. To check that there is no issue with the monitor or the cable, I tried the same thing logging in to windows 10 and it works fine.

Display settings in mint does not detect any external monitor.

Some have suggested using the Nvidia X Server Settings to detect the external monitor, but my Nvidia X server installed from 'mintinstall' software manager looks different from others and does not have any option to detect monitors.

How do I solve this issue?

That utility is only useful if there if there is an existing Nvidia GPU. Your laptop only has Intel graphics.

1. Is the monitor displayed when you open Preferences > Display?
2. What is the brand and model number of the monitor?
3. Would you use this command in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose

by the way, I am a new user to Linux, but I have heard that automatic detection of external monitors are usually not an issue.

I realised that now, kinda silly.

External monitor is not displayed on Display Setting.

I tested on a Dell P2016 monitor in office, and a Flatron L1719S monitor at home. Both have the same outcome --- auto detected on windows but not on mint 18.1.
The output does not even mention "vga"..

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by roblm »

First check if the monitor works if the power is turned off and back on when you get to the desktop.

The video connector sometimes is mistakenly called DP instead of VGA. To check for a detection error problem, you can test these kernel parameters by adding them to the kernel command line. The effect will only last for one session. At the GRUB boot menu select the correct line but don’t press Enter. Press the “E” key to edit. If no menu shows, then hold down the shift key while starting. Use the Down arrow key to go down to the line that starts with: linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff

Press the End key to go to the end of the line. Add a space and then type the parameter: video=DP-1:e
Press F10 to start your system. If the monitor is not working, try turning it off and back on, and check in Preferences > Display.

If that fails, then reboot and repeat the steps but use this: video=DP-2:e

If that fails, then post the Xorg.0.log file. Open the System Log in the Menu to view it. Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Press Ctrl+V to paste the lines between the two code words. If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to github.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

this does not work.

adding the video=DP-1:e parameter does not work either. When logging in, an error message says:
"Could not switch the monitor configuration
could not set the configuration for CRTC 64"

Display setting does show another monitor, but can't be turned on.

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by roblm »

Use this command to create an xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the opened empty file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   Option "Primary" "true"
   Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
   VertRefresh 24.0 - 76.0
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Reboot. At the desktop, if the monitor is not working, use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --primary --output DP1 --auto --right-of eDP1
If that fails, then reboot and use the video=DP-1:e parameter on the kernel command line that was previously used and repeat the other steps.
If that fails, then open the xorg.conf file again:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Remove the lines and add these. This is for the LG monitor only:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   Option "Primary" "true"
   Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   ModelName "LG Flatron L1719S"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
   VertRefresh 24.0 - 76.0
   Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync
   Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Reboot. At the desktop, if the monitor is not working, use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --primary --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of eDP1
If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then type: sudo reboot

Hi, I tried your solution up till
If that fails, then open the xorg.conf file again:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Remove the lines and add these. This is for the LG monitor only:
for the Dell monitor in office, but it did not work :(
An "Unknown DP1" showed up on the DIsplay Settings
disp2.png
but when I set it to on and apply changes, my laptop freezes up w/o the parameter video=DP-1:e
and shows and error with the parameter video=DP-1:e

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by roblm »

As I said in my previous post, the second xorg.conf file will only work with the LG monitor, which has a native resolution of 1280x1024. The Dell monitor has a native resolution of 1440x900. When you get to the desktop, check in Preferences > Display to see if two screens are shown, but don't click the Apply button.
If both screens are shown, then the video=DP-1:e parameter does not need to be used.

If both screens are not shown in Display, then reboot and use the video=DP-1:e parameter.
At the desktop, if the LG monitor is not working, then use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of eDP1
If that doesn't work, then use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output DP1 --off && xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024 --right-of eDP1

Yeap that's what I did; been testing it only on the Dell monitor in office though.

For the Dell monitor, second screen is not shown in Preferences > Display when parameter video=DP-1:e is not used.

Using parameter video=DP-1:e, the second screen is shown in Preferences > Display , but that second screen is still turned off.
Using command xrandr --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --primary --output DP1 --auto --right-of eDP1 gave

Code: Select all

xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by roblm »

What resolutions are listed in Display for the Unknown monitor? If 1280x1024 is listed, then use that setting and click Apply.

If that fails, then post the output of xrandr --verbose and post the Xorg.0.log file.

1280x1024 is indeed listed, but when I click apply, the screen either freezes (and I restart by switching off power), or gives an error

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

Post by roblm »

First change the xorg.conffile to this one. This is for the LG monitor:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   ModelName "LG Flatron L1719S"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   Option "RightOf" "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
   VertRefresh 24.0 - 76.0
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
This next step will permanently add the kernel parameter video=DP-1:e to the kernel command line, so you don't have to manually add it each time. Use this command to open the grub file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Change this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
To this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=DP-1:e"
Then use this command to update grub:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Reboot. Then use these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024_60.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024_60.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024_60.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024_60.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024R" 90.75 1280 1328 1360 1440 1024 1027 1034 1054 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024R
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024R
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_75.00" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024_75.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024_75.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_75.00" 138.75 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1027 1034 1072 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024_75.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024_75.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_74.94" 114.50 1280 1328 1360 1440 1024 1027 1031 1061 +HSync -VSync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1280x1024_74.94
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1280x1024_74.94

Does the above work for the Dell P2016 monitor?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear before: the Dell P2016 monitor in office is the main external monitor I am looking to connect to. The LG monitor I tried at home was just to see if I would get the same issue on another monitor

For the Dell monitor, use this xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   ModelName "Dell P2016"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   Option "RightOf" "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
   VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Then do the second step in my previous post for adding the parameter video=DP1:e to the grub file.

Reboot. Then test using these 3 commands, which are used together:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1400x900_60.00" 103.50 1400 1480 1624 1848 900 903 913 934 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1440x900 _60.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1440x900_60.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1400x900R" 86.50 1400 1448 1480 1560 900 903 913 926 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1400x900R
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1400x900R
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1440x900 _60.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1440x900_60.00
If that fails, try these 3 commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "1360x768_60.00" 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DP1 1360x768_60.00
xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1360x768_60.00
If none of those work, then is your laptop a dual-boot with Windows, or do you have another Windows system? You mentioned testing a monitor in Windows in your first post.

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

unfortunately those commands failed. I do have a dual boot with windows, but most of my work is done on linux mint since I switched. For eg., I can compile using vimtex while the pdf file is open, something I could not do in windows.

I am not familiar with linux still, is this an issue of driver incompatibility, kernel, the graphics hardware, or something else?

Or maybe I should consider buying a miniDP to DP cable and see if that works.

Re: Laptop not detecting monitor

I was looking at the ThinkPad L560 user manual. I assume you already tried the Fn+F7 key combination, which is for display mode switching. The choices are: Disconnect, Duplicate, Extend, and Projector only.

There is one last method to try. The output from the xrandr --verbose command did not show the monitor's EDID was being read. It can be obtained from the Windows installation. Switch to Windows and check that the monitor is working correctly. Then install Monitor Asset Manager. It can retrieve the active monitor's EDID in real time or from the registry. You can download it from majorgeeks.com:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/get/monito ... ger,1.html

Open the program and select the correct Real-time line under Display IDs for the monitor. The info in the window on the right should pertain to the monitor's display, not the laptop's display.
Monitor Asset Manager-2.png
Click File > Save as.... In the "Save as type" window, select "binary files (.bin). In the "File name" window, type edid.bin.

Transfer this file to the Mint installation. I would suggest renaming it .edid.bin, so it's hidden and place it in your Home directory. Then add this line to the Device section of the xorg.conf file, changing your-user-name to your actual user name:

Code: Select all

Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/your-user-name/.edid.bin"
Log out and back in.

If that doesn't work, then do these steps to check if the EDID was complete. Use this command to install the program edid-decode, which will convert the binary data in the .edid.bin file to readable text in the Terminal window:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install edid-decode
Then use this command and post the output:

Code: Select all

edid-decode .edid.bin
EDITED: I was looking at the last screenshot you posted in Preferences > Display. It looks like the setting for the external monitor is set to Off. Did you try setting it to On?

this did not work, but I assumed it works in windows. by the way, the external monitor switches on the moment I log in to windows

xorg.conf file contents, in case I did something wrong

Code: Select all

EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
EDITED: I was looking at the last screenshot you posted in Preferences > Display. It looks like the setting for the external monitor is set to Off. Did you try setting it to On?
I tried this too, set to On, choose a resolution setting, and then Apply, but there is either an error message or the screen freezes.

After adding Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/your-user-name/.edid.bin" to the xorg.conf file. I logged off, but am unable to log back in again. What happened is that I would type in my password in the log in screen, press enter, and then go back into the log in screen again. This gave me a mini heart attack. I logged in recovery mode and deleted the Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/your-user-name/.edid.bin" and it works again.

maybe I should stop trying to make it work..

Any startup problem from editing an xorg.conf file can be resolved by either entering tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then removing the file, as I explained in my third post. If you can't access tty1, then enter Recovery Mode to remove the file.

From my previous testing on a PC with Intel graphics, I've experienced the same kind of flaky behavior after adding the CustomEDID line and then logging out and back in. Sometimes it would work if I didn't type the password and just wait 10 seconds for the system to start automatically. Otherwise a reboot would usually work. However, these lines from the Xorg.0.log file showed the line was being used:

Code: Select all

[ 95.558] (**) intel(0): Option "CustomEDID" "VGA1:/home/rlm1/.edid.bin"
[ 95.559] (II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section Monitor0
[ 95.559] (**) intel(0): Loading EDID from "/home/rlm1/.edid.bin" for output VGA1
I suggest you try that method once again, unless you're finished with any more testing. Use this modified xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   ModelName "Dell P2016"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   Option "RightOf" "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
   VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
   Modeline "1400x900_60.00" 103.50 1400 1480 1624 1848 900 903 913 934 -hsync +vsync
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
   Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/lucas/.edid.bin"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Don't log out and back in but reboot. If the monitor isn't working, then check in Display and click Detect Monitors and then Apply.
If that fail, then use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output DP1 --auto --right-of eDP1
If that fails, then post the Xorg.0.log file and the output of this command:

Code: Select all

edid-decode .edid.bin

I tried using the modified xorg.conf[c\] file contents provided, but the same problem occurred --- I could not log in, even after restarting

First check in the UEFI/BIOS that Secure Boot is disabled.

1. Try updating the kernel to 4.8 in Update Manager > View > Linux kernels

2. If that fails, leave kernel 4.8 installed and then use this command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output VIRTUAL1 --off --output DP2 --off --output HDMI1 --off --output HDMI2 --off --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --output DP1 --mode 1400x900 --pos 1920x0
3. If that fails, then use this xorg.conf file again:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Layout0"
   Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "DP1"
   ModelName "Dell P2016"
   Option "Enable" "true"
   Option "RightOf" "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
   VertRefresh 56.0 - 61.0
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "Monitor-eDP1" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-DP1" "DP1"
   Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/lucas/.edid.bin"
EndSection
Reboot. If you can't get back to the desktop, then remove the xorg.conf file.

1. When you get to the desktop, post the Xorg.0.log.old file, not the Xorg.0.log.

2. Install edid-decode:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install edid-decode
Then use this command and post the output:

Code: Select all

edid-decode .edid.bin
3. Use the last xorg.conf file again but remove the Option "CustomEDID" "DP1:/home/lucas/.edid.bin" line. Log out and back in and then use this command again

Code: Select all

xrandr --output virtual1 --off --output DP2 --off --output HDMI1 --off --output HDMI2 --off --output eDP1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --output DP1 --mode 1400x900 --pos 1920x0
4. If that fails, add these lines, one at a time, to the Device section:

Code: Select all

Option "ZaphodHeads" "0,1:eDP1,DP1"
Option "ZaphodHeads" "0,2:eDP1,DP1"
5. If that fails, remove any added line from step 4, and try testing these kernel parameters on the kernel command line but don't use any xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1024x768.bin
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1280x1024.bin
vga=795
vga=792
6. Check in the UEFI/BIOS that Secure Boot is disabled. I added this again in case you missed it at the beginning, which I just added on 5-30.
