Mint 18.3 (17.3-18.3) Mate + GTX 460 twin monitor setup problem (separate x-screen), monitor 2 not recognized

Post by Janiporo »

EDIT: This effects all versions from 17.3 to 18.3

I currently setup my monitors with "Nvidia Xserver Settings"-GUI applet. I can see monitors fine, and set them up. But they do not work properly.

When using right monitor as main monitor (as it is with my setup), my left monitor is blank, only with task bar and normal-cursor, black desktop, If I try to open something to the left monitor (from task bar), it opens to the right monitor, right monitor works perfectly.

EDIT: this was the case in 18.1 [or 17.3], on 18.3 left monitor is black, and only cursor visible.

OS: Linux Mint Mate 18.1 / 64Bit, fresh install.
Graphics: Palit GTX-460 --> http://www.palit.com/palit/vgapro.php?i ... 40F&tab=ov
Left monitor is VGA / Viewsonic VA2216w (screen 1)
Right monitor is DVI / Acer AL2423W (Screen 0)
Latest Proprietary driver: Version 375.66

Output of:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output VGA-0 --auto
is:

Code: Select all

warning: output VGA-0 not found; ignoring
output of:

Code: Select all

xrandr
is:

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-2 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 518mm x 324mm

   640x480 75.00 72.81 59.94
when I flip around ( with "Nvidia Xserver Settings"-GUI applet.) --> left (VGA1) to screen 0 and Right (DVI) to screen 1, things are reversed, the DVI is not recognized (by xrandr), and the left VGA monitor activates normally, right stays "blank" (picture later in the post)

Here is output of xrandr in that case (VGA-0 changed --> screen0)

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected primary (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-0 connected 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 495mm x 291mm
   1680x1050 59.95*+
   1600x1200 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x960 60.00
   1152x864 75.00
   1024x768 75.03 70.07 60.00
   800x600 75.00 72.19 60.32 56.25
   640x480 75.00 72.81 59.94
DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
It seems that second monitor output is always lost somewhere in xrandr, you can see the ones not connected, but not the connected (screen 1).

So --> How do I force VGA (screen 1) active, when DVI (screen 0) is main monitor?

I had similar issue with Ubuntu earlier on (14.04 perhaps?) And that is why I changed to Mint. In Mint 17.0, double monitors work out of the box, but I want to upgrade.
It does not help using different proprietary driver, or newest kernel. I have all updates installed right now.

And I DO need two separate x-screens for my setup, need to be able separately turn cubes

PS: I am collecting data all over the internet, and adding it to here, even if I sort this out on my own, others can read this and get the help they need.

Re: Mint 18.1 Mate + GTX 460 twin monitor setup problem (separate x-screen), monitor 2 not recognized by xrandr

Post by Janiporo »

Something is happening, if I run from right (screen 0 / DVI) monitor following:

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0.1 xrandr
Then I get:

Code: Select all

Screen 1: minimum 8 x 8, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 16384 x 16384
VGA-0 connected primary 1680x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 495mm x 291mm
   1680x1050 59.95*+
   1600x1200 60.00
   1280x1024 75.02 60.02
   1280x960 60.00
   1152x864 75.00
   1024x768 75.03 70.07 60.00
   800x600 75.00 72.19 60.32 56.25
   640x480 75.00 72.81 59.94
Seems that it is recognized after all, but somehow not from main monitor...
Any ideas?

Still no help? Anyone?

Does anyone have this setup working with separate x-screens? (Linux Mint Mate 17.3, or newer)

Re: Mint 18.3 twin monitor problem

Post by Janiporo »

Now installed Mint Mate 18.3 (not Beta) and same problem persists, now screen is blank and all I can get there is the cursor.

Does ANYONE have this setup (separate x-screens) working? Could it be because monitor number 2 is connected via VGA? (EDIT: No, installed DVI-monitor, read on)

If I try

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0.1 firefox
then both monitors start blinking in turns. Firefox does start on second monitor, but it seems something is badly conflicting, since output is so messed up.

Monitors are not identical, and have different resolutions.

Here is output of:
sudo lshw -C video

Code: Select all

  *-display

Re: Mint 18.3 (17.3-18.3) Mate + GTX 460 twin monitor setup problem (separate x-screen), monitor 2 not recognized

Post by Janiporo »

Now I removed the VGA-monitor, and installed DVI-monitor. (so now both monitors are DVI, and on the same graphics card, of course). Then also reinstalled operating system, but no, other monitor stays black, except for mouse cursor.

What can I do wake the other desktop?

Another thing is weird, if I try to open firefox to the second monitor, both start blinking fast in turns, and I can see the firefox started there, but there is no simultaneous picture on both monitors.

This is the command to start firefox on second screen:

Code: Select all

DISPLAY=:0.1 firefox
Every other program I try does the same.

When typing:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
tells me following:

Code: Select all

If that helps anything.

Re: Mint 18.3 (17.3-18.3) Mate + GTX 460 twin monitor setup problem (separate x-screen), monitor 2 not recognized

Post by Janiporo »

Mint 17.2 has following specs:
Driver version 384.90
Xserver 1.15.1
And that combination works.

Mint 17.3 has:
Driver version 384.90
Xserver 1.17.1
And that does not work.

So something went wrong between Xserver 1.15.1 and 1.17.1

Mint 18.3 has:
Driver version 384.90
Xserver 1.18.4
Also that does not work.

So to be clear, mint 17.2 works fine with separate xscreens, but Mint 17.3 (and anything newer) does not.

Any ideas?

Bump

Anyone? I must upgrade my OS, since there is no support anymore for Opera browser and (chromium) flash-plugin (do not work together, so can not update Opera)

Hello,

i just recently had an episode with my gtx 460. I had a 24" benq hooked up to hdmi, and a 22" dell hooked up with vga through a dvi adapter. the dell was stuck at 1024x768 even though it was supposed to be 1680 x 1050/ I had to research the dell monitor to get the correct hotizontal and vertical refresh hertz rates and open the xorg as admin located in etc/...11 and manually edit both refresh rates to the correct values. this worked for me....hope this helps. that refresh rate has to be right or all kinds of things go awry
