There are no AMD proprietary drivers for ubuntu18 hence LM19, have not been released. AMDGPU-pro won't work on ubuntuLM19 kernels. Just use the built in driver based on AMDGPU open source. Unfortunately may not work for older AMD. However, I found to my delight that my '012 AMD-A8-6699K with radeon HD857XX APU graphics is handled quite well by defaults. I did have to choose the right monitor and resolution which turned strangely turned out to 4096x2160. My LG 72inch isn't supposed to go there but ..er..OK. Working MUCH better on photos and vids than the proprietary fglrx ever did for me in LM17. I haven't played games yet which push the graphics engine yet though.

I wonder if some problems folks see including me in the past is matching the monitor to the resolution options and not just what driver one uses?
comadore, pcDOS, hpux, solaris, vms-vax ....blah blah blah..

In my case, the defaults do not work after the second boot. During the install, everything worked beautifully. After the second boot, the screen dims to the point where troubleshooting can be done, but other than that, the unit is unusable. All driver install work was done to correct the dimming problem. None worked. Nomodeset is the only workaround i have found, and I would like to be able to at least use the radeon open source drivers, and eliminate the nomodest warning that comes up after each boot. Hoping that the proper driver will get the screen/laptop to properly go to sleep after 30 minutes.

Machine is fully up-to-date.

UPDATE:
With the installation of the latest kernal (4.15.0-29-generic), the display began going to sleep at the appropriate time. I removed the 'nomodeset' from the boot loader and rebooted. Unit still went dim on bootup, but the brightness setting worked. I was able to set the brightness, and it stays through reboots. Happy to say I now consider this laptop fully functional and correct on this OS (Mint 19).

I'm trying 17.3 on an old APU laptop to see if I can get the fglrx driver working, hoping that it will allow the system to switch the CPU to lower power modes to quiet the fan, as the fan currently runs full blast with the open source driver. The machine is a Samsung Series 3 laptop with an AMD APU, E2-1800 processor, integrated Radeon HD 7340 graphics.

I'm presented with *three* options in the Driver Manager: the open source driver, fglrx-updates, and fglrx. I first tried fglrx, rebooted, and the X server would not start. I'm going to try fglrx-updates next (but I don't know what the difference between it and fglrx is.) Does anyone know why there are three options instead of two, and why X server would not start with fglrx?

Edit: fglrx-updates also doesn't work.

In the Xorg log it says:
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:809 kmod_module_insert_module() could not find module by name='fglrx_updates'
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx_updates': Function not implemented
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@0:1:1)
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod-module.c:809 kmod_module_insert_module() could not find module by name='fglrx_updates'
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx_updates': Function not implemented
(EE)
Fatal server error:
(EE) no screens found(EE)
(EE)

Edit 2: looks like it was a kernel issue. I don't know why, but linux-image-4.4.0-130-generic had been installed on 17.3. (Is that a normal update for 17.3?) Going back to linux-image-3.19.0-32-generic allowed it to boot into the X server.

Edit 3: Lowering GPU power setttings to maximum battery life in both Linux and Windows, as well as forcing the processor power management state to its lowest on Windows still doesn't drop the fan speed, so this may have been all for naught. :) Time to break out the compressed air and see if dust on the fan is the culprit; otherwise, it would seem the fan just audibly runs on this model no matter what you do.

Has anybody had luck with the new amdgpu-pro 18.30 ?

https://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ubun ... 530.tar.xz

I tried to install it, but there were errors telling some required package can only be installed on Ubuntu. I had modified the installer just like with earlier versions, but that doesn't seem to be enough with this version.

Does anyone think it would be possible to convince AMD to remove these tests, or at least have them produce warnings and then continue? It is obvious that the biggest problem is their installer looking everywhere to make sure it is Ubuntu. Any Mint user at AMD?

I believe that kernel is too old for this. Something like 4.10 is required.

For anyone using the latest version of Linux Mint 19 the graphics drivers that are pre installed work very well for AMD 7xxx Series cards. I have tested with a few games and they actually perform better than on windows with proprietary drivers installed. My current graphics card is the firepro m4000 in my laptop also the same as the mobile 7750 gpu.

Hiii. i have Intel inspiron 7548 and it has a hybrid graphics with ati R7 M270. I have Linux mint 17 and it works fine. I want to update to linux mint 19 but i dont know if it will work.
i see the list and appear:
-AMD Radeon™ R7 260X Graphics
-AMD Radeon™ R7 260 Graphics

What do you think? Does anyone know if it will work with R7 M270? Because in my notebook when i installed the driver on linux mint 17, the version was R7 M265.

Thanks to all that have contributed. I have about pulled my hair out but finally got min DX-570 installed. Running Mint 18 and with directions picked up here I got 18.20 version installed and appears to be working properly.

Now the question. I upgraded cards to get OpenCL for photo editing. I use a program called Darktable. In the program when I go to options to enable OpenCL, it says it is not available. Maybe a software issue but my question is how can you check to make sure you have OpenCL installed and working?

Confusing thing is I am seeing a much faster processing of the photo and video. So the card obviously did something.

Hi there, new here!

I'm running Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon and I have been trying without success for the past few days getting the AMDGPU/AMDGPU-Pro Driver 18-40 to install.

The usual trick of editing the "amdgpu-pro-install" script by changing "ubuntu" to "linuxmint" (in the function os_release section) did not work due to a problem with the pre-install script contained with the amdgpu-core_18.40-676022_all.deb file in the downloaded package.

However I found a solution that worked for me here on reddit by the user "BuringBoxxes".

I thought I would share that solution here to help others who are in the same situation.

hey there

bought myself a new RX 570 as an upgrade for an old Nvidia Card
upgraded to LM19 from LM17.3 after installing the card (fresh install except /home)

This was more than a week ago but I still can't get the card to work
disassembled and reassembled the PC twice to check all power connectors and hardware
installed LM19 twice
tried to install amdgpu-pro (results in a black screen of death)
tried with different ppa, kernels, stock builds

always the same result, systems says there is no RX 570 installed/used

The only option I can think about is that there is something from Nvidia left in /home but I have no clue were and why

Create a new user and logon with that account. If the problem goes away, then yes there is something in the /home folder for your main user account. If the problem persists, then you have a system wide problem. This is the best way to troubleshoot suspected user-level issues.

What's the recipe for successfully installing amdgpu-pro version 18.50 on Mint 19 ?

I run the last 18.40 build without problems (Mint 19, kernel 4.15.0-42, R9 390). I tried identical installation methods with 18.50 but I can't get it to work. Installation will complete seemingly without any problems, but when I reboot my computer from the Mint I won't get any graphics on the screen anymore (not even the non-OS-dependent startup graphics normally seen while performing a cold boot). Monitor doesn't go to sleep, it sees a signal all the time but will show only blank screen forever. I won't get anything on the screen even if hitting ALT + PrintScreen + REISUB, which has worked everywhere else so long as I've been using Mint. That's quite strange.

The only option at that point is to physically reboot computer from a switch. Then the graphics are back and Mint will start, but when I run "inxi -Fx" I see that 18.50 hasn't been installed. The generic driver is running instead.

I tried installation with and without removing the ${1+"$@"} after $APT in amdgpu-pro-install file. No difference.
