A doubt. Now that linux mint 17.3 has finished its support, what recommendation are there for users who have legacy video cards, where fglrx (catalyst) is the only option to take advantage of 3D potential?

So I got a new PC at the weekend with a Radeon RX580 graphics card.

It was working out of the box but strangely Minecraft was having a tiny few issues (nothing major actually but slight flashing in-game when I run it in Mint rather than Windows (dual boot))

I found this thread and decided to update - I followed the instructions and I think I have got it right, oddly in the latest text file where you edit Ubuntu into linuxmint, that bit seemed to be there already? Anyway, I followed the rest, rebooted, and I think it is working (although minecraft still has the annoying tiny flashes and extra pixels - but anyway...)

if your hardware can't support or run current linux mint then you need to learn how to keep your existing OS secure or buy new hardware/computer

how is someone supposed to help you fix or maintain old hardware when they don't have your hardware? and if you need help with specific fglrx (catalyst) then you'll need to open a thread with that keyword in the title fglrx (catalyst)

general Info:
Mint 19.3 64bit, i5-6600k, RX570, Kernel 5.3.0.51, oibaf/graphic-drivers

Error history:
reboot after updates on friday gave me a black screen with "USB cable defect" error, as keyboard and mouse switched their lights on at start, I removed the webcam
error was gone but now got an empty black screen

I was able to login via tty terminal (ctrl+alt+f2) run thru different options/updates but no solution
decided to waith for the next driver update to see if there might be a change
the following updates the next days I got to see the Login Screen with the blinking courser in the login field but neither mouse nor keyboard worked (light switched on but no input) and the screen freezes after a minute
no chance to login in via terminal

starting into recovery works, so removed oibaf drivers (ppa-purge) and reset to default one but no change (tried with amdgpu and amdgpu-hwe-18.04)
starting with nomodeset gave me a black screen but I am able to login via terminal

inxi shows that the RX570 is dedected and amdgpu used as driver (but no detailed information via root terminal)
booted via live-USB (mint 19.1) successfully (confirmed that GPU is dedected)

Was not able to locate the problem but got the system running again with a "workaround":

- boot into recovery root terminal
- sudo ppa-purge -d bionic ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
- sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
- sudo apt-get install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386 mesa-vulkan-drivers mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386

while you don't need sudo as you are already root, at least ppa-purge was not working as it should without it
and last but not least:
- sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kisak/kisak-mesa

as I had problems with padokas ppa before (both versions) and now with oibaf, kisak seems to be between the stable padoka and both unstable ppa's

Just got some of the same errors doing the updates. Running Athlon 200E (part of Raven Ridge family).

Was working fine, now, ONLY black screen after screen sleep or system sleep. System boots and runs fine, but it won't wake the screen ever. I know the system is running fine, as I can either rlogin or connect to the file system from my windows machines.

I just updated to Linux Mint 20. Everything seems to be working fine except that the screen has flickering, temporary lines flashing across the screen, and some tearing. I believe I have all the updated drivers installed. The artifacts are displayed on both my primary monitor (Asus VX228) and secondary (Samsung TV 5203). Both are running at 60 hrtz/sec, which is what they were previously running at.

I checked into the refresh rate and noticed it was 60 hrtz/sec was with VSync. I don't think I have every seen it before. Could that maybe be an issue, or is there something else that could be causing the issue?

I just wish I knew more about this and how to control fan speeds. I have an AMD RX 590 Fatboy which falls into the new driver but the install never works right. I have graphics working but it keeps overheating my system and forcing shutdowns so I am hoping to find a way to increase fan speed and make it quit shutting down.

Anyway, I'm RMA'ing the GPU (an RX580, 8Gb) for a refund, due to the instability being present on other OS installs (e.g. Kubuntu 20.04 and Manjaro KDE).

I think my next GPU will be another Nvidia one!

Hello, seems like the right place to post my question.

Chrome (latest) is having issues running 4k video on YouTube - it hickups every time it loads the next video chunk like clockwork. Verified that by looking in DevTools network tab and literally every time it finished downloading next 4-5 MB chunk - it stutters for .5-1 second and continues.

I'm running a AMD Ryzen 5 3400G on 20.1 on the 5.4 kernel. Default AMD driver that comes with the kernel.

After reading the list where I see no APU listed, I must conclude that no APU is supported by Linux, because non is listed, only graphic cards, so when you just know as it is my case, that my GPU part is R7 it is not related to one GPU card, as only 2 GPU cards are listed, whose name begins by R7 ...

Hi everyone, just wondering if i'm understanding the first post correctly- I'm running a Radeon HD 7850 with latest linux mint (20.1). I assume this means, I can not use any kind of updated graphics drivers?

I tried to install legacy catalyst x64 drivers, but i'm not very clear on how to go about that. The install script gave an error:

I run an A10 7860k AMD APU and i have to change in grub the variation from radeon support to amd gpu but then the grub does not work correct and it shows me boot errors. That is the site that i used:

The old AMD card is supported only by the opensource radeon driver. The Catalyst driver you attempted to install is not compatible with the current kernel xorg server as AMD ceased development of it years ago.

The NVIDIA you have laying around will work quite nicely with NVIDIA proprietary drivers.
