I'm a little bit confused.

Isn't the amdgpu driver module included automatically with the kernel?

When I installed my 6900xt it did not work with the included kernel, but once I installed the 5.11 kernel from the hwe repositories it automatically loaded and everything worked just fine.

This is a thread for AMD graphics. It is not for Nvidia questions.

Yeah, my other laptop is going to be OEM set with Windows 10 and sold :( I should've done a bit of research into it before I bought it and put Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2 on.

Lesson learned: buy a machine that is Intel based -- Linux friendly... AMD Radeon GPUs and other hardware do not play as well....

I cannot stand Windows 10 -- except it is ok on desktops... laptops, I cannot stand it, so Linux is my only option. At least my wife's Intel based Asus with Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2 works GREAT!

I noticed that XFCE 19.3 isn't as forgiving with the display settings as Mate or Cinnamon, I switched to 1366 x 768 and it didn't work and got a message "unsupported video resolution". Unlike Mate and Cinnamon if you pick an unsupported resolution XFCE won't revert back to the previous setting automatically and you will be staring at a black screen no matter how many times you reboot. I tried the nomodeset thing and that didn't work so I had to hook up another monitor to be able to sort it out. I don't know why XFCE wouldn't add that option. Just posted as a heads up for anyone pulling their hair out as I was. It was an AMD Radeon card and that's the only reason I posted here as it wasn't the cause of the problem.
