</abandoned> New monitor opens a whole icky can of worms

Post by katalia369 »

For now I have reverted back to my old monitor just so I can get this post out there and if I'm lucky find a way to get this new monitor I was given to work.

System Info:
Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnnamon 64-Bit
Cinnamon 2.8.8
Linux 3.13.0-37-generic
AMD Athlon Dual Core 4850Bx2
Memory - 3.9GB
GFC - NVIDIA GT218 (GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 3)

Current Monitor is an OLD HP vs17e that holds a current resolution of 1280x1024 (5:4) VGA Only
Works stable, but has some issues, namely, has some cut off on the edges as it is a true square monitor not a rectangle number (told you old school)

Boyfriend gave me his old monitor as an upgrade, (Orion Model# SLED2468W) which only wants to load up in one of two modes, both of which are zoomed and stretched at lower resolutions and well don't translate well at that point. Icons half the size of my screen don't translate well.

When I go to the drivers and switch from the generic nouveau driver to the NVIDIA 304 with the new monitor I can get 1024x768 (4:3) as an option or a (16:9) option that cuts over half the screen instead of just a few edges

When I switch drivers to NVIDIA 340 things go even more haywire, I get more resolution options but every time I select the one that will work for the new monitor it displays "Not Supported" in big evil dancing letters and locks my system up.

Any ideas on a few tricks to try that might get the old man system to update to the new view? Or should I just stick with my slightly irritating but stable 1/4" of cut off square monitor?

Your HP monitor may have options in the Onscreen Display menu for changing the Horizontal Size/Position and Vertical Size/Position.

If you want to use the Orion TV, then some additional info is needed. Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx
xrandr --verbose
