Serena - Nvidia Drivers drivers not updating correctly

Post by Nibbuts » Sat Jul 22, 2017 8:49 pm

Hi I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

I am running Linux Mint Version:
Linux Mint 18.1 Serena (64 bit)
Kernel Version: 4.4.0-83-generic
X Server Vendor: The X.Org Foundation
X Server Release: 11804000
Steam Runtime Version: steam-runtime-beta-release_2016-12-05

The graphics card is a GeFroce GTX 650, and I have installed the nVidia drivers (nvidia-375) via the driver manager. The driver manager showing that the nvidia driver was installed.

Every game I try to run via steam, the game starts to load but will then close and go back to desktop. Same thing when I try to load games via Crossover.

I have looked at the software information via Steam and it show Driver: nouveau Gallium 0.4 on NVE7.

So I installed the latest nvidia drivers via ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa, and in the driver manager I update the drivers to nvidia-384, and still steam is stating the drivers are nouveau Gallium 0.4 on NVE7.

Please note I restarted the computer between every driver change.

Any information would be great...

Top pic is the computer I am having the issue with. As the screenshot shows I am using the nvidia drivers (right of the pic), but the system info states that they are not being used.

This is my other computer and it shows that the nvidia drivers are being used correctly.

Any info on where to start would be great.

This is a fresh install, but would I be best to reinstall and hope for the best?

Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

1. inxi -SMCGx
2. lspci -nnk |egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA"
3. ls /etc/modprobe.d

After installing a Nvidia driver in Driver Manager, the file nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf should be created in etc/modprobe.d to disable the nouveau driver, but it does not exist. This is a common problem I've seen in Mint 18.x. Use this command to create the file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
In the opened empty file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
Then use this command to update the initial RAM disk:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u
Reboot. Some users have reported needing to reboot twice to see a change.

Roblm, you are amazing. That worked perfectly. Had to restart twice like you suggested...

Thank you for the assistance.
