Dell Inspiron 7559 Proprietary Graphics Driver Installation

Post by Christo6 » Thu Jul 27, 2017 10:23 pm

I am attempting to load the nvidia proprietary graphics drivers on my Inspiron 7559, running Linux mint 18.2 cinnamon 64-bit edition. From a new install I have tried installing different version of the nvidia drivers (nvidia-367, nvidia-375, nvidia-384). Each time I installed the drivers and switch to nvidia with prime-select it caused the system to hang or the CPU to soft lock.

The inxi output after installing nvidia-367:

I was able to get the nvidia graphics driver to run once, but it started hanging again after a reboot. Here is the dmesg output from when it loaded:
https://pastebin.com/rArr8JSh

Some things I have already tried:

kernels:
Kernel 4.4
Kernel 4.8
Kernel 4.10

boot parameters:
nomodeset - boots, but doesn't load drivers of course
acpi_osi= - boots, but nvidia driver does not load
acpi_osi="!Windows 2015" - same as above

switching using nvidia-prime - boots and allows login while using intel, hangs when switching to nvidia
bumblebee - fails to run [ERROR[ Cannot access secondary GPU - error [XORG] (EE)

The BIOS has been updated to the lastest version, and there is no option to enable or disable either the integrated graphics, nor the dedicated graphics.

Any help would be appreciated. I will reinstall 18.2 cinnamon fresh.

You need to post some additional info. Use these commands in the Terminal:

Code: Select all

1. xed /var/log/gpu-manager.log
2. dpkg -l |grep -i nvidia
3. lspci -nnk |egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA"
4. ls /etc/modprobe.d
5. ls /etc/X11

On Optimus systems there are usually two files created in /etc/modprobe.d when the Nvidia driver is enabled, which disables the nouveau driver, unless that has changed in Mint 18.2. One is named nvidia-3xx_hybrid.conf, which exists, and the other is named nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf, which does not exist. I don't why both are needed. Use this command to create the second file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
In the opened empty file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
Then use this command to update the initial RAM disk:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u
Reboot twice. Some users have reported it was needed to see a change. Then switch to the Nvidia GPU and log out and back in.
If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to switch to the Intel GPU:

Code: Select all

sudo prime-select intel
Then type: sudo reboot
When you get to the desktop, post the Xorg.0.log.old file, not the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it:

Code: Select all

xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Press Ctrl+V to paste the lines between the two code words. If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to github.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

  Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
  0 /usr/lib/nvidia-375/ld.so.conf 8604 auto mode
  1 /usr/lib/nvidia-375-prime/ld.so.conf 8603 manual mode
* 2            /usr/lib/nvidia-375/ld.so.conf              8604      manual mode
  3 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf 500 manual mode

That option would be used when the Intel GPU is selected. What we don't want to see is this option selected, which was listed in the gpu-manager.log:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf
Your problem is puzzling. The Xorg.0.log.old file, which was created when you last selected the Nvidia GPU and logged out, but could not return to the desktop, looks like everything was configured correctly and should work. Would you open the xorg.conf.07272017 and xorg.conf.07282017 files and post the output. Use these commands to open them:

Code: Select all

xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.07272017
xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.07282017

07272017 is no longer there.

07282017:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "None"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:2@0:0:0"
    Option "ConstrainCursor" "off"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
    Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT"
EndSection

That's strange. The xorg.conf.07272017 file, which was listed in the ls /etc/Xll output should still exist. When the Nvidia GPU is selected, the gpu-manager renames the xorg.conf.07282017 file, or one of the others, to xorg.conf. That file is configured correctly.

I suggest disabling the gpu-manager and manually configuring the Nvidia driver. Use this command to rename the xorg.conf.07282017 file to xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.07282017 /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Then use this command to open the grub file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Change this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
To this, to disable the gpu-manager:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nogpumanager"
Then use this command to update grub:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Reboot. Then switch to the Nvidia GPU:

Code: Select all

sudo prime-select nvidia
Log out and back in. If you can't get back to the desktop, then use the command sudo reboot. If there is still a problem, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to rename the xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.07282017
Then use these commands: sudo prime-select intel and sudo reboot

Booting with nogpumanager works with intel selected, the mesa drivers are loading. Using prime-select nvidia then relogging causes cinnamon to go into fallback mode, no graphics drivers seem to be loading.

inxi -G

Code: Select all

Re: Dell Inspiron 7559 Proprietary Graphics Driver Installation

Post by roblm » Sat Jul 29, 2017 8:16 pm

Is the desktop in fallback mode now? That log file shows the Intel GPU is enabled.

Use this command again to rename the xorg.conf.07282017 file to xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.07282017 /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then select the Nvidia GPU, log out and back in and then post the log file, while the desktop is in fallback mode.

Alright after renaming to xorg.conf and relogging the system hung again. Here is the Xorg.0.log.log, which should be for that.

Code: Select all

That log file looks identical to the one in your third post. The configuration looks OK and should work. I'm stumped right now. Your problem is a little different from other similar topics I've been involved with dealing with Optimus systems. I'll have to think everything over. However, I'm quitting for tonight and won't be online again until tomorrow morning.

No worries. I am going to install windows on the computer and see if the nvidia card works on there. If not it is probably a hardware problem. Will post about it later.

Edit:
After installing windows it seems to be having similar problems with the nvidia driver. I am fairly certain it is a hardware issue. Windows loads the driver, but when trying to use the card it freezes up. Thank you for your help, I will probably be able to get the driver working again once I get the card replaced.

Posting just to see if anyone was able to resolve this issue. Have had extremely similar issues for the past few months.
