[SOLVED] HDMI not working, Dell inspiron 7000 laptop, LM18.2

Postby ilyaKrasnoglazik » Fri Oct 13, 2017 1:51 pm

Hi,
Problem: I can't connect external monitor to the HDMI port of my Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop, when using Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon.
Description: When i connect the monitor to the HDMI port:
- There is nothing on my external monitor screen, no indication that it's connected somewhere.
- the resolution changes to maximum on my laptop screen (was 1360 x 768, now 3840 x 2160 )
- When i open cinnamon display settings, i don't see an external display. only single original laptop display.

System Info:

note: I currently use the nouveau video driver. I have not tried to switch to any Nvidia drivers.

What i tried: I googled the problem, tried to add mode to xrandr, edit monitors.xml... with no luck.
I currently use the nouveau video driver.

Will be grateful for any help.
I"ll be happy to provide any additional information that might help me to solve the problem.

I'm not an expert on laptop video but I think you may have to install bumblebee. It's possible that the HDMI output is tied to the Intel graphics provided by the CPU.
If your problem is fixed, please mark your thread as [SOLVED] by editing the title of the first message in the thread.

Hey, Thanks for the advice.
I tried to install bumblebee with no effect.
Than i tried to download the latest driver nVidia (384) from nVidia website, when i installed it my x-server stopped working and i ended up with the tty.
but after i recovered i found a solution for me: nVidia-375

My final solution:
Open Cinnamon Settings -> Drivers manager -> select the nVidia-375 (recommended) driver for the nVidia graphics card instead of Nouveau ->
click "Apply changes" -> restart.
CAUTION: Before messing up with any nVidia drivers, better backup your root partition, if you want to get out of this dry.

Now the HDMI works perfectly :)
