Im not 100% but i think the hd 58xx series is legacy. Which means open source drivers only.

well it says it's supported and I followed carefully this guide http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu ... st.2Ffglrx

everything works great! games, tests, benchmarks and it still freezes randomly!

at this point I'm not sure if its GPU drivers or something else related to it :(

If that were true it'd boot to a black screen atfer installation of fglrx ... anything older than the 5xxx series is legacy.

Cinnamon may be too muich for that card though. Tried disabling all possible compositing effects?

hey its not that bad!
I played Battlefield 3 on this graphic card! :P

well it can be a good idea to try using MATE for a day or two and see if freeze will still appear

Wrong, unless you mean dl'ing the live CD iso and testing that. Installing multiple DEs is a bad idea. It's a good way to break your OS.

Good to know. Thanks!
ok I purged MATE which was installed all this time with Cinnamon... I guess that's probably my fault

Due to my hardware, I am using Linux Mint 17.3 MATE. I had random freezes in Linux only until I disabled "EuP" in the BIOS, which is related to Suspend and Hibernate I think. That and disabling Hibernate for MATE removed all random freezes. Before the change, Hibernate would cause a predictable crash 2 hours after resuming a session. Trying different versions of the Linux kernel changed nothing.

reinstalling fglrx all over again fixed the problem (maybe purging Mate as well)

also it turns out I missed "sudo amdconfig --initial -f" after fglrx install but before rebooting
