AMD 520 2GB and Onboard Intel HD 620 Hybrid graphics support for HP Kabylake laptop

Postby deepclutch » Tue Oct 17, 2017 9:17 am

On my newly bought HP Laptop (Model: HP 15-BS576TX) which has a dedicated AMD 520 2GB DDR3 graphics card and Intel HD 620 onboard graphics in a Kabylake Core i5 processor system. No idea about dynamic switching of graphics card between integrated graphics and dedicated graphics card.

My doubts are:
1. Which AMD drivers to be installed? Which one is better proprietary or open source? If Open Source, is there any PPA's exists for latest updates?
2. I've heard about "bumblebee" which is for Intel+Nvidia? Is there something like that for AMD+Intel setup? What is PRIME?
3. Is there anything to be done to control graphics card fan speed or something to keep the laptop go cooler when you use the dedicated AMD 520 card.

TIA

Another problem with this new model is it comes with Realtek RTL8723DE Wireless module which is not yet supported in Linux kernel. https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/issues/270

Once you switch to your AMD card and not be on your Intel APU, your driver manager will have the open source drivers for AMD. As for the 520 card. I would not get too excited about driver support just yet for closed source. Even desktops are having issues because AMD is spitting out code very quickly. I woiuld think the 500 series stuff will eventually be supported, but with the new Vega based APU's launching supposedly in 18 or less months, the 500 series may get left behind. My A10 APU is a hawaii based(GCN second gen) and should be able to run propietary drivers, however the gpu is based on the r7-240 card and will not be supported with the new drivers stack. there will be technical tricky to come that is for sure.

That is sad to hear. Guess I made a wrong choice selecting AMD gfx card based system. I'm waiting for the arrival of a cheap ralink based usb wireless adaptor (onboard wlan module is not supported in Linux yet). Will report back.
