Hardware acceleration on AMD APU E-450 with Radeon HD 6320

Post by Ukrop »

Hi everybody!

Here's one more beginner :)

I installed LM on my HTPC to learn Linux. In KODI v.16 some of my videos have really bad shutter. They play perfectly fine on Win7 (it's still dual boot - to verify things like that).

I suspect hardware acceleration is not enabled. I read alot but can't figure out what proper driver do I need (looks like AMD abandoned old cards...). What is the best driver should I use? How can I get hardware acceleration? (I don't have such option in KIDO for now...)

Here is part of inxi -Fxz:

System: Host: ZBox Kernel: 4.10.0-37-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
Desktop: Cinnamon 3.4.6 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)
Distro: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya
Machine: Mobo: ZOTAC model: ZBOX-AD04 v: XX
Bios: American Megatrends v: 4.6.4 date: 06/21/2012
CPU: Dual core AMD E-450 APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-) cache: 1024 KB
flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4a ssse3 svm) bmips: 6600
clock speeds: max: 1650 MHz 1: 1650 MHz 2: 1650 MHz
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320]
bus-ID: 00:01.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
Resolution: 1440x900@59.89hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD PALM (DRM 2.49.0 / 4.10.0-37-generic, LLVM 4.0.0)

Thanks in advance!!!!

Did you max out shared memory for the integrated video in the BIOS?
For mint 18.X your only option is the open source drivers.
For mint 17.3 you can use the FGLRX driver set with your HD6300- series.
If you have a half height chassis only, you can get a GT 1030 for $75 USD, 30W card

I'd recommend a cheap Nvidia card or doing a clean reinstall of 17.3. Frankly if I was still using AMD and the card was supported in fglrx I wouldn't touch 18.x.

Also, I don't think a 5 year oldf AMD integrated card is enough for Cinnamon plus a weighty media app like Kodi. Try Xfce and a faster media player.

Thanks for reply!
The strange thing is - this machine runs the same Kodi 16 perfectly fine in Windows 7... And I assumed that Linux should be even better for older machines...

I really want to get to know LInux better...
