Nvidia driver makes resolution Worse!!!

Post by Joeasaurus »

Ok so I have a fairly old dell monitor, its second hand from a school.
I'm pretty damned sure it can go as high as 1024x768
but even if it doesn't, that's not my main issue.
Without the Nvidia driver installed, both Mint 6 and Mint 7 RC1 will give me 800x600 resolution.
I installed the driver and the resolution goes down to 600x480!!!

What's going on???

I'll take a stab at this.

Have you tried changing the rsolution manually in nvidia-settings?

It would help to know for sure what the specs are for your monitor or at least the model number.

Also what graphics card and driver are you using?

Well for me i have the following:

Intel Quad Core,
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX,
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT,
2x 19" Monitor (DELL 1908FP)
1x 24" Wide Monitor (DELL 2408WFP)
1x 80Gb Drive
1x 250Gb Drive

I'm running Linux Mint 5 LTS with the 3D Graphics enabled.

The 24" is what I am using at the moment, through the 8800 GTX can get one other screen working but only as a clone of a part of the 24".

I downloaded the driver file from NVIDIA it is a ~~~~~~.run file??? Dont know what to do with that!!!

Would Ideally like all 3 to work like in Vista / XP but I guess its just a price to pay to use Linux.

Thanks,

Finn
Which driver are you currently using, and what's the exact file name of the driver you downloaded?

Yes ive tried changing it. I'm not one to use the GUI tools. i prefer to use the CLI. So I have now tried both the Nvidia settings thing and Xrandr in the CLI. Both do exactly the same, they tell me i can only get 600x480. When the driver is not enabled/installed, Xrandr will let me get 800x600.

I'm not to sure about the model of my screen but i'm 95% sure it has a max of 1024x768.

as for my graphics card, im poor and all i have is an old Geforce4 MX or something along those lines.

I did try compiling the specific driver for my card but it failed with a bunch of errors.

Ill edit with my screen monitor when i get the chance to check it :)

Hi,

I've looked at the screen in question and it's a Dell E173FP and it's native resolution is 1024x768.

Can anyone help me?

Try this

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
Then logout, login, then

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-settings
Configure your card and save, then logout, login just to be sure it worked. Hopefully it does because I don't know what else to do.

I've got the nvidia-settings open now and the resolution is set to auto.
i click to change it and i only get two options: 320x240 and 640x480

:(

It did confirm my graphics card for me though and we now know it's a GeForce4 MX 440

im in desperate need of help :(
