The open source driver in Mint 18 works fine for AMD APUs. I have an a12-8800b (carrizo) and it runs fine. If your gaming performance is inadequate, loading a ppa like oibaf or padoka may help.

What I suspect is with fglrx the graphics speed will be more

fglrx does not support proper video acceleration (vdpau or vaapi). It may well be superior in gaming though. You will have to try it out.

Open source drivers is the only option to choose from. I was thinking that the proprietary driver, if present, would have given better performance.
