Recent performance drop with NVidia card

Post by starcross »

Hi all,

I have been using Mint for a few years and have had great results, but at some point recently my graphics performance has gone downhill. I don't know exactly when this happened - maybe the last few months, so I assume it happened after a package update. This occurred with Mint 18.2, but carried on to 18.3 as well. I tried a completely fresh install of 18.3 but have the same issue

All screen draw operations are slow and choppy - windows dragging, resizing, videos playing especially in full screen only manage about 10fps. There is no tearing, it just stutters. Almost like there is no hardware acceleration

I have a Geforce GTX 560 Ti, an Athlon X4 845 and 8GB RAM with plenty free. Everything is buttery smooth in Windows. My monitor resolution is 2560x1440

In terms of drivers, I have tried Nouveau, nvidia-384 and 387, all with the same issue. I have tried older Nvidia drivers but many of these don't seem to boot any more or crash into software rendering mode. I assume this is simply due to lack of compatibility now they are getting too old. I've also tried Kernel branches 4.4, 4.8, and 4.10

Any ideas? Could it be due to an update to Cinnamon, xorg, or something else?

Please generate an overview of your system like this:

- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;

- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

- Press Enter.

- Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Your current closed non-free video driver is probably your best option. So don't change it.

It should help if you disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:

Thanks, I have disabled all the effects as described, but sadly no improvement

Just to add a little more information. I have tried the MATE desktop (both my existing install and LIve CD) and the problem has disappeared. There is bad tearing, but I guess this is because vsync needs forcing on.
Anyway perhaps an indication there is an issue with Cinnamon?
