backlight problem with nvidia chipset with kernel 4.13 (but works fine with 4.10)

Post by warmbeer » Mon Jan 15, 2018 6:55 am

Hi everyone, and thank you in advance!

On my laptop (with nvidia video chipset) I have just installed Linux Mint 18.3. With the latest kernel (4.13.0-17) it is not possible to adjust the backlight intensity, but with 4.10.0-38 kernel ... it works.
I have read that the brightness (with nvidia) it is a fairly common problem, but I ran out of ideas and google always leads me in the same directions (bios update, nvidia driver, xbacklight workaround...).
What can I check for troubleshooting? Where am I wrong?

Thanks again

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

First install the nvidia-384 driver, by means of Driver Manager. Reboot and then try the 4.13.0-26 kernel.

Note that the first boot with the new kernel/driver combo might take unusually long.

Thanks Pjotr ... but no ... this doesn't resolve the issue.
I have try with 4.10.0-38-generic, : 4.14.13-041413-generic, 4.13.0-26-generic but ... no success...
With nvidia driver it is not possible to adjust the backlight intensity, neither with 4.10
With 4.14 cinnamon also crashes ...
I have restored the original conf.
thanks for your time, ...

edit the file (from a terminal, root user) /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness won't change the brightness

I have tested the following kernel parameters

Code: Select all

acpi_backlight=video
acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_backlight=native
acpi_backlight=none
without success

The output of acpi_listen is like this:

Code: Select all

video/brightnessdown BRTDN 00000087 00000000 K
video/brightnessdown BRTDN 00000087 00000000 K
video/brightnessup BRTUP 00000086 00000000 K
video/brightnessup BRTUP 00000086 00000000 K

Hi have re.installed from scratch, but no success again.

I noticed that: in the /sys/class/backlight folder I have (kernel 4.10.0)

Code: Select all

 nv_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/nv_backlight
and the backlight adjustment works.

with the 4.13.0 kernel I have

Code: Select all

 acpi_video0 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/backlight/acpi_video0
and no backlight adjustment ...

changing etc/X11/xorg.conf don't fix the issue (edit: xbacklight NOT works, xrandr and /sys/class/backlight/ instead yes ).

Any suggestions?
Thanks
