Nvidia GPU Help? 18.3 KDE not recognizing the second GPU

Post by mtcandcoffee »

Hoping someone can help me here?

TLDR: I was running 18.3 xcfe which worked fine with 4 GPUs. I recently got a new case and decided to build a normal comp and upgrade to 18.3 KDE since I absolutely love this distro and it works great on a laptop I have. My goal was to bridge the Nvidia cards so I can have a nice gaming rig :D

Processor: Intel i5 6500 3.20
Graphics: 2 Nvidia 1070 GPUs (it recognizes the first slot but not the third slot where the second GPU sits)
Driver Version: 384
Mobo: MSI Z170A
Power supply: 1000W

Problem: mobo doesn't recognize there is a second GPU even though it's powered and all the cables are connected.

Things I've tried:
  • Uninstall/reinstall CUDA 9.1 using an older kernel (I was having separate issues with kernel 4.13 but not 4.10)
Swapping GPUs from the 1st and third slot to see if it's the GPUs, all GPUs are recognized in the first position and work but are not recognized in the third position
Rechecking the cables and using different PCI-E power cables from the power supply (I know this is good because it was powering 4 other GPUs previously)
Tried a different mobo and the same issue repeats itself the same way
Tried using 384 and 387 drivers
At this point, I'm wondering if this is a driver issue? It was working fine under xcfe.

Any thoughts or other things I should try?

Thank you in advance!

Please run the following command from Terminal and post back the results.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Have you checked on BIOS upgrade for the board? Seems to be a lot of posts on various forums about getting more than one 1070 GPU working on various boards in the MSI Z170A series, but don't know which board you have. Some posts do suggest BIOS update needed for that card.

There are even some weird problems with faulty M.2 adapters and GPU. That might suggest testing with no other cards besides the GPUs.

If you remove the GPU from Slot 1, does a GPU in Slot 3 work (alone). Do either or both work from a post screen (not OS)?

Edit: I see you read my mind, ala inxi.

Edit2: OK, BIOS 1.3 is pretty old. Might look at that first.

Thanks! I updated the bios and took out the first card to see if the board would recognize the second gpu. Unfortunately, it didn't.

I then jerry-rigged a smaller 1060 to the case, hooked it up via a pci riser, and the board recognized the card.

So, I think in this case it's a hardware issue. :(

But the good news is I have an updated BIOS and two running GPUs :)

I took a glance at your User Manual as I was curious about Slot 1 and 3 combination. I was thinking that should be 1 and 4, or PCIe E1 and E4 by definition.

Look at pages 29 and 30. Are you using the PCIe slots as recommended?
