Dual monitor horizontal alignment problem

Post by zosimas » Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:58 pm

I tried a search but since I'm not even sure how to ask the question, I'm going to try and explain it.

I use dual monitors. I built this computer last year and have had no problems until a couple days ago. My right monitor horizontal alignment won't stay where it's suppose to be and leaves a black bar on the right side... if I change the resolution it will however look normal, although everything is large. I am trying to decide if this is a software issue or a hardware issue (although I'm not sure what would have changed if software).

Resetting the monitor to it's factory default doesn't work, I can manually move the horizontal position but it doesn't move over nearly far enough.

here's my hardware from pcpartpicker: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/zosimasy/saved/jWmLkL

I'm going to try and provide a screen shot.
But first:

$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Kaveri [Radeon R7 Graphics]
bus-ID: 00:01.0
Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
Resolution: 1440x900@59.89hz, 1440x900@74.98hz
GLX Renderer: AMD KAVERI (DRM 2.49.0 / 4.11.0-14-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 17.2.4 Direct Rendering: Yes

I uploaded a photo of the two screens together so you can see what I'm talking about, the monitor on the right there's about a 1" black vertical space.

Both of these monitors are probably 8+ years old, so I suppose buying new one's probably would't be a total waste, but if it's something I can fix in software that would be preferred.

UPDATE: I updated to Mint 18.3, installed updates and rebooted. The screen on the right offsets ONLY after I logon, didn't notice that before, so I guess it's software?

Wrong guess. It's a hardware issue. Try a different monitor or try the monitor on another system.

yeah, you're right, thank you :)

I swapped cables from my other monitor and now it works fine. So instead of using the VGA cable I'm going to pickup a cheap HDMI to DVI-D cable for now. A pair of new monitors will go on my wish list, I think it's about time.

Nice detective work :)
