[SOLVED] Closed non-free Nvidia driver won't load

Post by Pjotr » Sun Mar 04, 2018 11:23 am

---Edit for the benefit of future readers: I've documented the solution on my website:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... won-t-load
(item 12, left column)

My Nvidia graphics card keeps running on the open source Nouveau driver, and refuses to run on the closed non-free Nvidia driver.

I've tried the nvidia-340 and the nvidia-304, with reboots in between. Both the versions in the official repo's and the (slightly newer) versions in the graphics-drivers PPA.

I even tried blacklisting nouveau, but to no avail. What could be wrong?

These are the specs:

Did it work in -112?
Pjotr you will likely have to uninstall -116, update gcc-5, reboot and reinstall -116
Has to do with retpoline

I already suspected something like that.... Thanks for the information. :)

Is there any indication that those Nvidia drivers will work with retpoline, somewhere in the future?

It is actually the updated gcc-5 that should fix it, seems to be an issue only with dkms installed and installed from source.
The vermagic isn't correct as it needs to be 4.4.0-116-generic SMP mod_unload modversions retpoline but without the gcc-5 update it doesn't have retpoline
I updated my Ubuntu and Linux Mint installs and didn't have that issue with gcc-5 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9

Strange, I already seem to have that version:

Code: Select all

pjotr@bureaucomputer ~ $ gcc-5 --version
gcc-5 (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9) 5.4.0 20160609

Check

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep retpoline
To see if that is the problem

This is the output:

...not to side-track the discussion (i don't even have an NVidia card, so my knowledge about such is nil), but is by any chance Secure Boot left enabled on this machine?

No Secure Boot.... That feature isn't even present in this old motherboard.

Have you checked the logs for nvidia? Might also want to look in /var/lib/dkms/ for the nvidia module and see if there isn't a make log showing a failure

Can you make heads or tails from these logs?

But pjotr's make log for 4.4.0-116 shows that there is much more to it than that bug report, seems to be caused by a lot of changes in the kernel header files

This might get some attention if posted on https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/linux/5/

My Nvidia graphics card keeps running on the open source Nouveau driver, and refuses to run on the closed non-free Nvidia driver.
I've tried the nvidia-340 and the nvidia-304, with reboots in between.
I had the same/similar problem for a few days.

Mint 18.3, nvidia 8400GS, NV drivers 304 and 340; kernels 4.14, 4.13 and 4.10.

The driver installation looked fine, no errors, but it wouldn't load at boot. The good news is that I finally fixed it; the bad news is that I did so much fooling around that I really don't have any idea what the fix was!

I had that along the way...which lead me to:

I looked at roblm's instructions but didn't do them, although they helped someone else.

Pjotr,

Your Xorg.0.log file shows the nouveau driver is still loading, after you supposedly blacklisted it. How did you blacklist it?

Also, use this command to check if the nvidia kernel module was built:

Code: Select all

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/

I blacklisted it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, by adding the line blacklist nouveau.
.... But I reversed the blacklisting after it proved unsuccessful, in order to keep my system predictable.

This is the output:

Code: Select all

pjotr@bureaucomputer ~ $ ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
nvidia_340.ko
I should add that my system is fully updated, including all level 3 and 4 updates (none excluded).
