Basically, it's due to be scrapped, but I managed to tinker in the fan of a previously scrapped notebook and put in 2 512MB memory modules totalling a hefty 1GB
I might find a fix for the hinge too.
Starting from the live stick first I had a lost deskbar. It took me a while to find out it was set at 1280x768 where the native resolution is 1280x720. That changed it runs pretty well from the live CDUSB. It's good enough for some internet browsing and email checking. I may want to use it on some trips where it can provide me with a private environment for my mail and sites, but not a big loss if something happens to it.
So I installed it with Mint 18.3/32 XFCE.
At first boot, it loaded at 640x480, without a possibility to change it. Looking in the driver manager there was the option of installing cpu microcode which I did. After rebooting it was set a 1280x768. I was able to set the resolution to 1280x720. At the next boot however it was set at 640x480 again, and unable to change it, as if no driver has been loaded.
And so for the following boots.
There probably will be solution to get it back to 1280x720?
