Can someone please tell me what this"Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) FAILED: nouveau"part is and how to fix this.
My only 3/4 problems are:
1. nemo is dead slow most of the time
2. FF, Chrome etc sometimes freeze (hw acceleration problem I guess?)
3. Video plays are sometimes choppy with vlc/smplayer
4. Startup and shutdown time is unusually longer. Yes, samba is enabled and I need samba unless there are other easy way to share files within my home devices.
Thank you all for your time and efforts in helping me with this.

Hello SealTorch Image

Welcome to Linux Mint and the Linux Mint forum :)

In your case it's nothing fatal. You have two graphics cards and the intel graphics is the one being used as indicated by Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: intel

The nouveau module is the open source driver for NVIDIA cards.

Thank you WharfRat for the greeting and the quick response! Wasn't expecting response from such high level users without earning it :)
Anyway it's a relief that it isn't something fatal. I've had severe problems with this hybrid graphics things, and being new on linux made the journey more difficult. I just upgraded RAM from 4GB to 8GB just to be able to handle this graphics issue more smoothly.
So, I see I have a GUI for NVIDIA X Server Settings that doesn't launch. Tried CLI that returned:

Code: Select all

$ nvidia-settings
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system
Tried to locate it and look for Prime

Code: Select all

$ which nvidia-settings
/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
$ which nvidia-prime
$ apt install nvidia-prime
[sudo] password for *****:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
nvidia-prime is already the newest version (0.8.2linuxmint1).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-4.4.0-116 linux-headers-4.4.0-116-generic linux-headers-4.4.0-53
  linux-headers-4.4.0-53-generic linux-image-4.4.0-53-generic
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 185 not upgraded.
How do I now fix this nvidia-settings so I can use Prime profile from GUI to switch between cards?
What would be the CLI command to do the switching?
Is this correct/okay what the Driver Manager showing?

I hope I am not too nagging. Any head up on my 3/4 problems in my OP?
Thank you again!

I really can't be of any help with a dual graphics setup, but there are plenty of how-to's like http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... ntu-16-04/

I just did a nvidia and intel graphics together ubuntu search.

Sorry, but this is the best I can do.

Perhaps someone else here who has a similar configuration will chime in.
