MSI GS65 - GLX - Compatible Nvidia X driver not found

Post by sommarnatt »

Hi!
My first post here, trying to dual boot Mint and also my first go at Mint ever.
Started out with the install giving me a prompt, so I had to add nomodeset vga=791 to kernel options at boot. After installing nvidia-390 from graphics PPA, I was able to boot without kernel options.
However, Im stuck with 800x600 resolution and glxinfo says

Code: Select all

'Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
OS: Ubuntu Mint 18.3 Xfce
Hardware: MSI GS65 - Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 + Intel integrated graphics

Below is my inxi -Fxz and Xorg.0.log. Appreciate the help or pointers. This is also my first Linux Desktop experiance in YEARS.. (usually running linux servers without X)

Re: MSI GS65 - GLX - Compatible Nvidia X driver not found

Post by kc1di »

Hello sommarnatt and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,

First thing I would try is to upgrade to kernel 4.15.0-20. You can do that by clicking on the update manager in the system tray and selecting view then kernels.
0nce it's installed reboot. You may also need to reinstall any Nvidia drivers you've installed. But use the driver manager under Administration if it offers you a newer driver. Also in you readout from Inxi it says nouveau is still being loaded. If you had installed Nvidia driver from Nvidia you will have to blacklist Nouveau so it does not load. you can't load Nvidia and Nouvea at the same time they are not compatible with each other.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the help, that was right on the spot :) Still have to compile wifi drivers each kernel update, but I can live with that :)

Nice to see such an active community!

Cheers

if you use the dirver manager found under Administration on the Menu it it will install DKMS which will compile the drivers for you when you upgrade kernels.
In any event, Enjoy :)
