Problems setting monitor refresh rate to 144hz

Post by lukeh10 » Tue Jun 05, 2018 4:52 pm

I'm Having trouble setting my monitor's refresh rate to 144.00 with xrandr.

I am able to set it to 120hz but when I try 144hz my monitor goes black and says "out of range".
I dual boot windows and 144hz works on there. I don't know if this is a driver issue or what.

Here is my system info:

Code: Select all

System: Host: luke-MS-7917 Kernel: 4.10.0-38-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0)
           Desktop: Cinnamon 3.6.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)
           Distro: Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia
Machine: Mobo: MSI model: Z97 GAMING 5 (MS-7917) v: 1.0
           Bios: American Megatrends v: V1.9 date: 12/23/2014
CPU: Quad core Intel Core i5-4690K (-MCP-) cache: 6144 KB
           flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 28002
           clock speeds: max: 3900 MHz 1: 886 MHz 2: 799 MHz 3: 1439 MHz
           4: 897 MHz
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Hawaii XT [Radeon R9 290X]
           bus-ID: 01:00.0
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 2560x1440@120.00hz
GLX Renderer: AMD HAWAII (DRM 2.49.0 / 4.10.0-38-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 18.0.0-rc4 Direct Rendering: Yes
xrandr gives:

Code: Select all

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 598mm x 336mm
   2560x1440 59.95 + 144.00 120.00* 99.95 84.98 23.97
   1024x768 60.00
   800x600 60.32
   640x480 60.00 59.94
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
I've tried xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 144.00
and searched the internet for help, but nothing seems to work. I would appreciate any help.

Use this command and post the output: xrandr --verbose

What is the brand and model number of the monitor?
