Display drivers not loading and wifi not working on MSI GS65

Post by tkchris »

I'm fairly new to Linux, but I've never had issues to this degree during installation before.

My two main problems at the moment are:
- Screen resolution is locked at 800x600 (no option to change in Displays GUIs). I'm eventually wanting to use Cuda on the Nvidia card, but it appears as though the driver isn't being loaded.
- Wifi isn't working, (but ethernet is working, at least).

I have tried installing nvidia drivers by running sudo apt-get install nvidia-390, but that hasn't helped. As I mentioned, I am fairly new to Linux, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS If you're needing extra info from me, detailed instructions would be much appreciated

Open your terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
re-boot your machine
Next go to the driver manager from the menu and install the recommended nvidia.
re-boot your machine again.

Display drivers should only be installed from the driver manager.

As to the wifi.

Run all recommended updates in the update manager and go from there..

Seems to be a lot of posts online regarding that card so do a search for Qualcomm Atheros Device e0b1

Hi,
I like to share my experience and solution here which is related to wifi and graphics.

Configuration:
MSI GS65
Linux Mint 19 - Cinnamon. (xfce works nice also)
Wifi - Working
Nvidia 1070 - Working
Intel HD graphics - Working
4K display - upgraded. you may think downgrade if you are gamer.

Installation :
- I took backup of all ssd and partitions with ACRONIS bootable usb to be able to go back to windows (in case of return back).
- Make proper BIOS changes (disabling secure boot ...etc)
- Installation of linux mint 19(customized partitions. this is up to you.)
- in case of black screen on boot, i added "nomodeset" to startup to use software rendering.
https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... tions.html
- install nvidia drivers.
https://mintguide.org/system/856-instal ... -mint.html
- change in kernel for wifi driver : i re-copiled the kernel. after this i did not made any kernel update to linux. link below helped a lot.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comment ... nuxubuntu/
- purchase new 4K display panel from aliexpress. panel fits perfectly to screen casing and works nice without problem.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/15-6inc ... 5be54cbfee

Problems :
- making wifi work may take time but eventually it works.
- Linux Mint 18 cinnamon always crashes with nvidia driver but Xfce works fine. Mint 19 cinnamon is more successful at this point.
- switching between nvidia and intel graphics still requires logout. No solution there for now.
- Accidentally bringing external hd close to front-rigth section just above speaker of laptop cut the screen power instantly. i have no idea on that.
- to replace 4K display i needed to dismantle the FullHd display panel. which is not quick. old panel is sticked from behind also. but other than that there was no other problem.
- Keyboard is basically USB devices (seems on lsusb) and has it's own memory of color macro. so MSI applications may not work linux. last configuration may stuck on keyboard on linux. i still did not try to change it on virtual machine.
- ofcourse to adjust display cable (40 pin EDP) i needed to open back cover so my warranty is over. WHO CARES!!! my curiosity is stronger.

Not: these are the steps i remember. For detail i may post later.
