Problem with dual monitor on Acer Nitro 5

Post by informaticaquemu »

Hello, when I connect the second screen through the hdmi and turn on the notebook everything looks good, but when system start the second screen turns black, and if I disconnect and reconnect, many horizontal lines are shown ... I tried updating and changing the drivers but it does not work.

First, where did you get those drivers from? Downloading them from a mfr's site seems obvious to a Windows user but in Linux it's not such a good idea.

Second, you need to post some useful info, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots):

Code: Select all

So you have already tried installing the recommended Nvidia driver in Driver Manager and then selecting the Nvidia GPU in the NVIDIA Prime applet in the System Tray area, or in the Nvidia X Server Settings utility on the PRIME Profiles page and then logging out and back in?

Re: Problem with dual monitor on Acer Nitro 5

1. First, use this command and post the output: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

2. Then open the Driver Manager and install the nvidia-384.130 driver again. After rebooting, use this command to switch to the Nvidia driver: sudo prime-select nvidia. Copy and post the message in the Terminal window. Log out and back in. Then use these commands:

3. ls /etc/modprobe.d

4. xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf

5. xrandr

6. Is the external monitor connected through an HDMI to HDMI connection?

7. What is the brand and model number of the monitor?

If you have changed back to the intel GPU, then use the command sudo prime-select nvidia again.
When the Nvidia GPU is selected, a special xorg.conf file should be created that looks similar to this:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "None"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option "ConstrainCursor" "off"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
EndSection
That’s not happening on your system. First use this command to open the existing xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Remove the existing lines. Copy the lines above and paste them into the file.
Next, the gpu-manager needs to be disabled. Use this command to open the grub file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/default/grub
Add nogpumanager to this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
So it will now look like this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nogpumanager"
Then use this command to update grub: sudo update-grub

Reboot but be prepared for trouble.

If you can't get back to the desktop, then enter the virtual console tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. Log in and then type sudo prime-select intel and sudo reboot

If you still can't get back to the desktop, then enter tty1 again. Log in and then type:

Code: Select all

sudo nano -t /etc/default/grub
Use the Arrow keys to move the cursor. Remove nogpumanager from the line it was added to. Press Ctrl+X to save and exit. Then type sudo reboot

If you can't enter tty1, then reboot and select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /

Then use this command to open the grub file:

Code: Select all

nano -t /etc/default/grub
Remove nogpumanager from the line it was added to. Press Ctrl+X to save and exit. Then type these commands and wait: prime-select intel and reboot

Hello!
I had several problems with the system and I had to reinstall everything (deleting the UEFI partition with Windows) and all the problems were solved. Apparently the system did not work well because of this.
Thank you very much for the support! Regards!
