[SOLVED] Dell 7773 NVIDIA MX150 3840x2160 Resolution Missing

[SOLVED] Dell 7773 NVIDIA MX150 3840x2160 Resolution Missing

My laptop is a Dell 7773. It has an Intel Graphics HD 620 and an NVIDIA GeForce MX150. I keep the laptop display disabled and closed, so I am not using the laptop display. My 4k monitor (television) is a Vizio D40u-D1.

The only thing stopping me from permanently dropping Win10 and switching back to Mint is that I can not use a resolution of 3840x2160. The only resolutions that are available to me are 1920x1080 and 1280x720.

I just wiped out my Linux partitions and performed a clean install of Linux Mint 19 Beta, so none of the other things I have tried should be an issue.

On previous Mint versions, there was a special xorg.conf file created when using laptops with hybrid graphics, when the Nvidia GPU was selected, but you have Mint 19 and there have been changes, so there is no xorg.conf file.

Use this command to create one:

In the opened empty file, add theses lines:

The ModeDebug line will add more info to a log file to help determine why the 3840x2160 resolution isn’t being used.

Log out and back in.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot
At the desktop, use this command to open the Xorg.0.log file:

xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log
That file will probably be too long to post in the forum. You can send it to pastebin but first the program pastebinit will need to be installed with this command: sudo apt install pastebinit
Then use this command to send the file:

The log file should have a line saying the xorg.conf file is being used but there is none. I wonder if it was renamed after logging out and back in. Open the File Manager and go to /etc/X11 and check for an xorg.conf file or any file that starts with xorg.conf and has something added to it.

Mint 19 has also changed the commands used to give root authority for creating and editing files.
I tested this command and it worked for me. Repeat this step in creating an xorg.conf file:

It did not work, but I ended up opening file manager with elevated privileges, created a new document, edited it with those lines, saved, exited, and now the file exists.

The xorg.conf file is still not listed in the Xorg.0.log file. Either it was removed or renamed after logging out and back in, or possibly it’s due to another change from Mint 18 to 19 and the file is not being read from that location. However, this location, from the log file, is still being read:

Open the File Manager and go to /usr/share/X11. Right click on the folder xorg.conf.d and select Open as Root. Create the xorg.conf file with the added lines. Log out and back in and post the Xorg.0.log file.

Well, I just confirmed that an xorg.conf file added to /etc/X11 is still being used, from testing I did in a Mint 19 beta installation. Here are the lines from the Xorg.0.log file:

It appears that the Nvidia driver is not reading the line Option "ModeDebug" "true" because of this design. Usually the HDMI port on the laptop is connected internally with the Nviida GPU but the info from the log file suggests it’s connected to the Intel GPU on yours. On your hybrid graphics system, the modesetting video driver is used along with the Nvidia driver, when the Nvidia GPU is selected. When the Intel GPU is selected, only the intel driver is used. I don’t know if the modesetting driver supports a 3840x2160 at 60 Hz resolution.

I want to do a test to see if the resolution can be changed through the xorg.conf file, but it will be a smaller resolution at first.

Use this command to open the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf file for editing. This command is different and can’t be used in creating a new file:
