Problem with installing nvidia driver

Post by krasimirpetrov »

Hello, guys.

I'm new member in the Linux world and I have a problem installing a nvidia driver.

I have notebook Asus Vivobook with Nvidia 940MX. I trying to install nvidia driver from terminal, but when i try to open nvidia-settings it gives me the following error:

I'am trying with nvidia 390 and lower.
ERROR: Unable to load info from any available syste
I tried with:
sudo prime-select nvidia
but when I try to see what happened:
glxinfo|egrep "OpenGL vendor|OpenGL renderer"
the output is:
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 155 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (X_GLXCreateNewContext)
Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 35
Current serial number in output stream: 36

I tried removing all the drivers, downloaded the driver from the nvidia site and tried to install it - again without success.
I had a similar problem under Ubuntu, but then with a reinstallation of the driver everything was fine.

Can help me how I can handle the problem.

Have a nice day :)

Have you tried using the software called "Device Manager" found in your LM menu? This software has worked a real treat for me on both older AND more recently released NVidia cards.

Immediately after installation, I tried with Device manager - again without success.

Did you remove the Nvidia driver you downloaded from Nvidia’s website? If so, how did you do it?

Yes, I tried to remove the nvidia driver with sudo apt-get purge nvidia.

I tried to install run file, but when the installation starts, it shows me a message that xorg is working (or something of this type right now , I can not say exactly what it is message, but my laptop is not in me now).

That command won't remove a Nvidia driver downloaded from Nvidia's website, but it looks like you got stuck trying to install it.

Open the Terminal, use these commands and post the output:

Code: Select all

inxi -SMCGx
lspci -nnk |egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA"
ls /etc/modprobe.d

First, be sure Secure Boot is not enabled in the BIOS.

After the Nvidia driver is installed, there should be a file in /etc/modprobe.d named nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf but it does not exist. Use this command in the Terminal to create it: gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf

In the opened empty file, add these lines:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

Then use this command to update the initial ramdisk: sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot. Then use this command to try switching to the Nvidia GPU: sudo prime-select nvidia
Log out and back in and use this command to check if the nvidia driver is being used: inxi -Gx

If you can't get back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. After logging in, use this command to switch to the intel GPU and reboot: sudo prime-select intel; reboot

Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

1. xed /var/log/gpu-manager.log
2. dpkg -l |grep -i nvidia
3. ls /etc/modprobe.d
4. ls /etc/X11
5. sudo prime-select nvidia

Use this command to delete the xorg.conf.06282018 file because it is not configured correctly:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.06282018

Use this command to rename the xorg.conf.06292018 file to xorg.conf:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.06292018 /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Next, the gpu-manager needs to be disabled because it is not working correctly. Use this command to open the grub file:
gksudo xed /etc/default/grub

Change this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

To this, to disable the gpu-manager:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nogpumanager"

Then use this command to update grub: sudo update-grub

Then use this command to switch to the Nvidia GPU: sudo prime-select nvidia

Reboot. At the desktop, use this command and post the output: inxi -Gx

Be prepared for potential problems. If you can’t get back to the desktop, then use the previous instructions to enter tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. After logging in, use this command to switch to the intel GPU and reboot: sudo prime-select intel; reboot

If you can’t enter tty1, then reboot and at the Grub boot menu select Recovery Mode. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /

Then use this command: prime-select intel; reboot

The Nvidia driver is loading. I want to check if everything else is configured correctly, use this command:

Code: Select all

xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log |egrep -i "nvidia|modeset"
EDITED: That command should have been cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log |egrep -i "nvidia|modeset"

Re: Problem with installing nvidia driver

Post by roblm »

The log file shows everything is working as it should. However, you will have to use commands to manually switch from the Intel GPU to the Nvidia GPU and back because the gpu-manager is not doing this correctly. This happens on a small number of laptops and notebooks with Optimus technology, like you have. I think it’s because some of your hardware is less compatible with Linux.

This will be a test to see if you can switch GPUs. Use this command to switch to the Intel GPU and then log out and back in:

Code: Select all

sudo prime-select intel && sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
When you get back to the desktop, use this command and post the output: inxi -Gx
