I uninstalled the drivers - that weren't doing anything and moved to Kernel 5.8. This seems to made a marked difference and the driver message also isn't appearing any more. Thanks for the tips, I think this enough to do some dev work. For your information my new inxi output;

I think finally got AMDGPU to install after revisiting it many many months later using a RX580.

It seems I kept trying to install a version of amdgpu that was too new and I did not know this because there were no obvious links to old versions.

Ran:
inxi -Fxzr
Result: System: Host: localhost Kernel: 5.4.0-70-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 7.5.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 4.4.8
Distro: Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia base: Ubuntu 18.04 bionic

Installed build-essential just to be sure.

Then downloaded amdgpu-pro-20.20-1089974-ubuntu-18.04
That's 20.20, not 20.50!

Then extracted the tar.xz, opened the folder then opened terminal from the folder and ran
./amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=rocr,legacy

And rebooted. It finally went through without putting me in tty1 or a blank screen.

Then did a check with glxinfo | grep -i opengl

Code: Select all

OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon RX 580 Series
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.14736 Core Profile Context
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.60

OpenGL profile mask: compatibility profile

OpenGL ES profile version string: 4.6.14736 Compatibility Profile Context

K31,

In regard to the newest version of Radeon Software for Linux, in my 3-21-21 update in my third post in this topic, I tested Radeon Software for Linux version 20.50 and it installed without any problems in Mint 20.1 using the 5.4 kernel, and it also has support for the 5.8 kernel. My video card is a Radeon RX 560. It's not necessary to install build-essential.

robim,
Build Essentials only requires 20.5kb of disk space so it's no skin off my back. I'm just so happy to have it working. :D
I ran Blackmagic's RAW Speed Test and its giving me 14fps for 8k renders with my CPU and 46fps 8k renders with OPENCL.

I wouldn't have known it if you hadn't linked to AMD's website. I looked at the URL and "Compatible 64-bit Operating Systems" and changed the version in the URL to get an older one to match up with my Ubuntu version. I never landed on a page that give me older versions or got an explanation to match versions, at least not in a brief way as I skimmed websites for answers.

Listing things out might be helpful to someone in the future.
For example use inxi -Fxzr to determine which Ubuntu base you're using and download the corresponding release

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... inux-20-20
•Ubuntu 20.04
•Ubuntu 18.04.4 HWE

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... inux-20-30
•Ubuntu 20.04.1
•Ubuntu 18.04.4 HWE

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... inux-20-40
•Ubuntu 20.04.1
•Ubuntu 18.04.5 HWE

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... inux-20-50
•Ubuntu 20.04.1 and 20.04.2
•Ubuntu 18.04.5 HWE

Maybe I'm mistaken, I'm still very new to Linux, but this seems like it would be helpful.

Re: How do I install AMDGPU-Pro on Mint 19?

Post by rdlf4 »

I've installed amdgpu-pro-19.30-934563-ubuntu-18.04 mentioned by @roblm on my laptop -- calm down, I know it isn't supposed to run on mobile CPUs. Mine is an APU with R7 integrated graphics, but it also has an AMD RX 540 (that's the dGPU), which the system reads as RX550 with 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM. APU in question is an AMD A12 @3.6GHz (max speed).
After carefully reading his instructions, I decided to go with kernel v4.15.0-58 because it works with my sensors reading applets and because v4.15.0.141 or superior kernel version isn't compatible with the installer.
Installation finished successfully. No tweaking any system file required.
Output of the installation: https://pastebin.com/McDwXWRt

My system did reboot just fine.
However, I expected cinnamon effects to run smoother, not at 2 or 3 frames per second. I also noticed that, unlike with the driver provided by Linux Mint (amdgpu), I now see screen tearing. I needed to know if the "pro" variant of the kernel was indeed running, and so I did:

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -i -EA3 "3d|display|vga"
which returned:

Code: Select all

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Wani [Radeon R5/R6/R7 Graphics] [1002:9874] (rev c8)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Carrizo [1025:1201]
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
	Kernel modules: amdgpu
--
03:00.0 Display controller [0380]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Lexa PRO [Radeon RX 550/550X] [1002:699f] (rev c3)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Lexa PRO [Radeon RX 550] [1025:1210]
	Kernel driver in use: amdgpu
	Kernel modules: amdgpu

And before you ask, yes, I did make sure my dedicated GPU is supported by amdgpu-pro: Image
So how come I'm stuck with amdgpu? Shouldn't the "pro" driver load the PRO variant?
Finally, upon looking for xorg-video in Synaptic, it returned a bunch that are installed on my system. Whether they're being used, I don't know.
So after installing amdgpu-pro, am I supposed to keep having those installed? (down below)
Image

And while I'm at it, the list that came up after searching "amdgpu-pro" is as follows (I managed to fit everything that's installed in the picture):
Image

I'm having this feeling that even after installing amdgpu-pro, I'm still using amdgpu, but a worse version, which comes with screen tearing as a bonus. Nice, AMD!
What am I doing wrong? :/ Shouldn't it preload amdgpu-pro? Would it be an issue with amdgpu-pin? How would you go about fixing that?

Thanks in advance!

After installing AMDGPU-Pro you will still see amdgpu listed as the driver. To check if AMDGPU-Pro is loading, use this command: grep libglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This should be the output: Loading /opt/amdgpu-pro/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Both the integrated GPU and discrete video card are enabled. I suggest disabling the integrated GPU in the BIOS. Then use this command: inxi -Gx

For the tearing problem, use this command to get more info: xrandr --prop

It’s normal for these other drivers to be installed: xserver-xorg-video-intel(radeon, vesa, nouveau, etc)

That's the output I get.

On this Acer laptop, the BIOS doesn't let me determine which to enable or disable.

I see that it mentions TearFree as auto (supported off, on, auto). Not sure if I should change it to on.

Post the output of inxi -Fxrz

The tearfree option is usually disabled. Use this command to create an xorg.conf file:
sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "amdgpu"
    Option "TearFree" "on"
EndSection

Log out and back in. Check for tearing.

It no longer does that but performance when browsing through directories full of folders is just horrible.
I mean, when scrolling up and down feels more like a slideshow - only at much slower speed, full of frame-drops. I'm not sure this is an issue with Nemo itself, or amdgpu-related. I was just hoping the pro variant of this driver would give me a better experience.
I'm still stuck with 19.3. Here's why: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comm ... ogging_in/

I'm guessing the open source amdgpu just doesn't cut it anymore and I'll have to go with the proprietary driver from now on, especially for Linux Mint 20.

Anyway, what kernel version comes by default after upgrading to v20? And what would be the best option of Radeon Software for Linux that's compatible with such kernel version?

Don’t install the AMDGPU-Pro driver for better overall performance, because it is outperformed by the amdgpu driver. AMDGPU-Pro is mostly open source code with a little proprietary code added.

If you frequently need to utilize the processing power of the video card to assist the CPU in high computation tasks such as video and image editing, 3D modeling, animation and rendering apps, and GPU mining of cryptocurrencies, then the OpenCL component of the AMDGPU-Pro driver is needed to accelerate computations.

Before doing anything else, you need to post the output of these commands:
inxi -Fxrz and xrandr --listproviders

Roblm, real quick, I couldn't help but ask you this.
Last night I was reading some docs about amdgpu and it pointed out two different commands, amdgpu-install and amdgpu-pro-install.
So based on your comment quoted above, why would AMD have an "All-open" amdgpu driver included if... it's already available and installed from my distro's repository? My guess is it could be their implementation of amdgpu with proprietary tweaks, but since that's AMDGPU-PRO, what's amdgpu there for?

I suppose because each new release of the Radeon Software for Linux has support for the newest Radeon GPUs. The support in the Linux distros will lag behind for a while, so a PPA will need to be added to get the newest OpenGL support through the Mesa package and LLVM support.

Re: How do I install AMDGPU-Pro on Mint 19?

Post by roblm »

pdc,

Your question is not related to installing the AMDGPU-Pro driver, so you need to start a new topic. Your GPU does not support that driver and this info you posted shows that driver is not installed:
grep libglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[ 9.799] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Thank you for your time to notice and respond to request. Prior search has failed root problem locating AMD updated HD GPU display driver resolution, the explicit pixel control, the focus adjustment, AMD chip HDMI output SHARPNESS to a HDMI TV video monitor display..

SHARPNESS adjustment was AMD available software as a slide control... ending ~2015 gama, SHARPNESS, contrast, brightness, resolution, adjustments, solved blurred smeared LCD LED TV monitor displays direct from Linux Mint root driving AMD HD 8000 series embedded chips...

Apologize if this is not AMD software search for an expert problem resolver with AMD software knowledge, applications, testing, history expertise.

In short is there a XORG or AMD software configuration file adjustment for AMD GPU HDMI output SHARPNESS? Please help locate answers, AMD software HDMI chip group topic

If I correctly understand what you’re asking, those adjustments were available through AMD’s Catalyst Control Center, which was part of AMD's proprietary fglrx driver installation, which ended in Mint 17 and is no longer available. You should be able to make those adjustments directly from the TV’s on-screen menu.

If you have any further questions, then according to forum rules, you will need to start a new topic.

YES, If i may, AMD Catalyist was able to adjust sharpness, Gama, color etc. applied direct at the AMD HD8370D graphics chip, before HDMI, DVI output to standard TV monitors.

TV monitors EDID data tables have restricted EDID editor / video signal edge enhancement etc. to adjust the raw unfiltered as is video output from AMD HD8370D graphics...

Was inquiring the AMD GPU-PRO experiences, evaluations comparing the new embedded xorg.conf.d.. xrandr solutions offered to TV monitors enhancement beyond restricted Dot Per Inch cvt generated Modeline.

AMD GPU PRO software installation problems over Radeon Richland 8370D video driver failed, was unable
to resurect AMD Catalyist source filter to adjust, edge enhance, TV display resolution as an example real time video signal processor AMD 8370D + Catalyist chip driver.. Thank you for your time and AMD support knowledge.

I think I installed the AMDGPU-PRO drivers using https://amdgpu-install.readthedocs.io/en/latest/, and the installation appears to have went well. However, the drivers don't seem to be in use.

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Vega 10 XT [Radeon RX Vega 64] driver: amdgpu v: kernel
  bus ID: 03:00.0
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: amdgpu
  unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 2560x1440~144Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Radeon RX Vega v: 4.6.14735 Core Profile Context
  direct render: Yes

I'm running Linux Mint 19.3.

Please advise. Thanks.

After installing AMDGPU-Pro, the driver listed in the inxi output will still be amdgpu. To check if the PRO driver is loading, use this command: grep libglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The module libglx.so should be loading from here:
Loading /opt/amdgpu-pro/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Not here, for the open-source amdgpu driver:
Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

Thanks. Happily it seems to be loading from /opt/amdgpu-pro/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so. I suppose this means the drivers are in use?

What I'm a bit confused about is this part of the inxi output: Device-1: AMD Vega 10 XT [Radeon RX Vega 64] driver: amdgpu v: kernel. Should not the 'kernel' be changed to the driver's version number or something, if the driver was in use? At least that's what I understood by this post: viewtopic.php?p=1796310#p1796310 .

Could you please clarify?
