External Monitor working, internal laptop monitor not working

Hey guys,

I have installed the newest nvidia-384 driver and i am running linux mint 4.13.0-45-generic. I have an Acer Aspire VN7-591G-73ZD notebook. I have plugged in an external monitor. When I start Linux Mint there is a little linux mint icon popping up for like 0.5 seconds, and then the login startup-page is displayed on the external monitor, while the internal laptop display stays black. When I log in i can use Linux on the external monitor, but the internal will stay black. However, the internal monitor is detected! I can for example drag a window to the internal laptop monitor.
When I start Linux Mint without the external monitor plugged in, the internal monitor will stay black.

EDIT: i just upgraded from 4.10 kernel to 4.13 kernel, with the 4.10 everything worked fine. i did the upgrade via the update manager by mint.

Info from the user manual:

The display device might be set to an external monitor. Press the
display toggle hotkey to toggle the display back to the computer.

Just to cover the basics, make sure you didn't disable the internal output in the Displays tool (or use xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --auto) and make sure you didn't turn the backlight brightness to zero.

i already tried the xrandr --output eDP-1-1 --auto command, nothing happens... i tried to increase backlight brightness by using fn+right-arrow / fn+left-arrow... nothing happens. however, other fn shortcuts like disable touchpad and increase volume etc work, so i don't think that's the problem.

Yep, I don't think there'd be a problem with the keys, either, but just to make sure:

PS: actually that's assuming the iGPU is active, had overlooked your nvidia chip. You'd have to adjust the path for that one.

hmm ya i tried to set the brightness with your command, wont work :/

but i noticed something strange:

when i type nvidia-settings in cmd i get the following output

EDIT: also there is a red icon in the tray that says Active graphics card: unkown. clickin that icon will open the nvidia settings, however when i try to switch from intel to nvidia graphicscard, the settings gives me a prompt saying "please log out and in again to apply changes". After doing so nothing changes though...

Did this start after installing the Nvidia driver? If yes, then removing the driver will allow the laptop’s display to work?
