Is it okay for me to add to this thread? I suspect my problems are similar, but with a Nehalem integrated Intel Graphics controller.

I've been running 17.x, 18.x on this hardware, for years. Now I've upgraded to 19, I'm stuck in hardware rendering mode. I had no problems running a 4.15 kernel with 18.3, so I don't suspect that it's a kernel problem.

I boot with rEFInd and have tried using nomodeset, but that had no effect, other than reducing the resolution.

Someone actually fixed it for me. Use this command and restart after it installs

Code: Select all

sudo apt install libegl-mesa0

Thanks, that did the trick, although I had to use aptitude because one dependency was at a higher version than that required by libegl-mesa0, and had to be downgraded. I think that I had done something in my previous efforts to fix!

Your welcome! This should be useful for people in software rendering mode on Linux mint version 19.

if only...

To be sure that I will not run into problems, I have installed a VirtualBox with Linux Mint Cinnamon 19. I get the same message in my top right corner and when I perform this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install libegl-mesa0
I get the response it is already installed. After reboot the same message is shown.

Now to avoid problems and knowing AMD/ATI GPUs are not really compatible (in my case: Radeon HD 4650, yes, I know it is ancient), I decided to buy a new graphics card. I can pick it up in the store tomorrow, but would like to run it by you guys before I install it. It is the Gigabyte GeForce GT 1030 Low Profile 2G. Now I know that nVidia's support is a lot better than AMD's, so I think I should be better off.

I'm just wondering: Should I upgrade to a more advanced GPU?
What I use my pc (Acer Aspire M7720, 10GB Ram, year: 2009) for is graphic and web design (Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator (all on Windows in VirtualBox) InkScape, Node-JS, Firefox, FileZilla, etc.); I don't play any games, but like to watch a video from time to time and these can be 1920x1080 resolution.

Can any one give some advice? Please, elaborate and tell me why you give the advice that you do!
Thanx a lot,

Thomsterdam

Thom, the system goes into software rendering mode because you are in a Virtual machine.

Hey MrMajik,

Thanx,...
That thought did cross my mind,
but that still leaves the rest of the question: Is this GPU that I am buying a good choice?

Anyone?

Thanx,

Thomsterdam

Nvidia could have problems but are easier to fix than Amd problems.
