[SOLVED-ish] Replace Radeon HD5850 with GTX650 - how to?

Post by HenryH » Sun Jul 08, 2018 9:26 pm

Would someone please give me a few pointers about graphics gards and/or point me to the right place to get the info I need?
I'm (almost) happily running Mint 18.3 on my desktop computer but my graphics card it trying to die.
( Cinnamon will not give a readable display in 'default' mode but is (just) usable in 'software rendering' mode. )
The current card is an AMD/ATI Radeon HD5850
The card I intend to replace it with is an Nvidia GTX 650
I appreciate that I will not see any performance improvement but that's not the point.
What is the procedure for telling Mint that I do not want to use the Radeon but that I want to use the GTX?
I can't believe that I am the first to want to change manufacturers but I have not been able to discover a 'suggested procedure'.
Thanks for any & all assistance.

1) go to hardware manager and verify you are on open source drivers for AMD. if not change to them and reboot.
2) power down pc and replace card.
3) turn on PC and the Kernal will load open source nvidia drivers.
4) enjoy your new card or go to driver manager and look for closed source drivers

With the driver shenanigans AMD is doing, most folks will already be on open source.

Thanks, Citizen229.
I did try that with a 210 card that I have but when I re-booted all I had was a black screen & some white text (I don't recall what the message was).
Now that I have the GTX 650 I'll have a go with that and hope that your solution 'works'.
{ I assume that when you say 'hardware manager' you are referring to 'System Settings//Driver Manager', all it shows is 'intel-microcode'. }
Results will follow shotrly . . .

intel microcode? Going to assume there is a setting in the bios to turn off the onchip/onboard graphics. Going to also assume you turned it to disabled.

Hooray!! it is working (at last).
I confirmed in the BIOS that the PCI card was the preferred graphics card.
I disabled the intel-microcode driver
Inserting the GTX650 card into the computer & booting wens as far as the mint logo but then I received a black screen with two lines of text:
[24.895017] talpa-vetting: [intercepted 1715-1766-1766] open failed (-13), will have no stream
[24.898102] talpa-vetting: [intercepted 1711-2091-2091] open failed (-13), will have no stream
Magic Sysreq allowed me to re-boot to GRUB and thus to root
Cleverly (I thought) I installed the nvidia-current drivers & re-booted.
NO JOY! :?
out with the GTX650 & in with the HD5850
The HD5850 card would still boot OK
I put the GTX650 back in the box & tried again, with no success (same as above).
 I then used a LM19 boot/install CD as the boot medium & this was successful :o
Pop the CD/DVD out & re-boot IT WORKS :) :D

Now running on the Nvidia 304 drivers but I'll put the box back together and upgrade the graphics to more recent drivers.
Fortunately I hace Ciaro-Dock installed as the panels do not seem to be happy but I'll get onto that later.

Thanks, Citizen229 for your ideas & suggestions.
I don't understand what has & has not happened but it does seem to be (mostly) working.

& if it is of interest to anyone, I have been able to fix/use the panels by upgrading the Nvidia driver to 396.24.02

The intel microcode, you will want to enable it in driver manager. Those files are protective against flaws in the achitecture known as Spectre and Meltdown.

OK. I've re-enabled the intel-microcode and it is all OK except that I seem to be unable to update the Kernel but I'll post in another forum for assistance with that.
Thanks.
