[fixed, but not solved] RX460 graphic card New install NO SOUND

Post by newbi462 »

OK, this thing came with W10, and I know the DP ports on this RX460 graphic card will carry sound to my monitor speakers because they did so in W10.

When I select "System Settings>sound>HDMI/DISPLAYPORTHDA ATI HDMI" I only have the option "Digital stereo (HDMI)" and no sound at all.

I found something about kernel 3+ having this off by default? So i made the GRUB change outlined here
https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1051

But still no sound.

Any ideas? Do I need to DL Ubuntu AMDGPU-PRO Driver?

If so do I need Ubuntu 18.04 or Ubuntu 16.04.4 ver?

Does it have "(plugged in)" next to your "HDMI/DISPLAYPORTHDA ATI HDMI"? Does your card have more than 1 HDMI slot? did you click the checkmark to set to that device?

No it is not showing "(plugged in)" next to the option. Unless I run "pavucontrol" then there it do and shows "unluged" next to HDMI2, HDMI3, HDMI4...

When I look at the playback tab in "pavucontrol" it shows osilation like it is trying to play sound but nothing is coming out

Yes, this card had 4 mini DP out ports on it.

Also I tried to do the driver from AMD, DONT DO THAT!!!(at least not the way I did, no clue if I did it right), after I rebooted my system would not boot, just got reinstall done, so the GRUB change is no longer done.

As for "did you click the checkmark to set to that device?" where would that be?

If it helps, List of playback devices from aplay

Code: Select all

aplay -l

  Subdevices: 1/1

This is just weird to me because it can see them but I cant select them in a way that they will play sound to the monitor speakers

So If I read this right it is trying to use the "Card-1 Intel Device a2f0" instead of the "Card-2 Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Device aae0" but I have no clue how to repoint it to use the right one so the sound will come out of my RX460 DP port like it should. Which is weird with "pavucontrol" showing the oscillation form things that should be playing sound.

Any ideas?

The volume control (pavucontrol) has 2 buttons next to the output devices. one is a lock. The checkmark is "set as fallback" which really makes the device primary. this will be under output tab of the sound mixer.

Re: RX460 graphic card New install NO SOUND

Post by newbi462 »

When I go there each device has 3 buttons next to it
1) a speaker icon: that seems to mute/unmute
2) the lock: that locks Left/Right audio together or unbinds them
3)a checkbox: which is checked for both with no way to uncheck it no matter how many times I click on it, I clicked the

So I clicked the icon next to "HDA ATI HTMI Digital Stereo (HDMI)" which is now gray like the lock icons are when it is locked to one master vol.

Tried to play a YT vid, which showed up im the "Playback" tab: but was trying to use the OTHER AUDIO OUTPUT, and still no sound even if I manually toggle it there... Opened a new tab an tried something else and that defaulted to the "HDA ATI HTMI Digital Stereo (HDMI)" output but still no sound.

So I think I have the fall back set, but how do I get it to transmit the sound to the speakers using the DP port?

Post by newbi462 »

If AMDGPU PRO will work, I am ok with that

But assuming that can work, I clearly did it wrong before because like I said BLACK SCREEN WITH CURSOR at reboot...

Any chance you could walk me around proper install of this driver for Linux Mint starting with what ver to DL?

Step 1? https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/linux
Do I want the "Radeon™ RX 400 Series Ubuntu (64-bit)" one, right?

Assuming that is the case is this the install I need to follow?
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... stall.aspx

ASSUMING SO: that takes me to
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... Notes.aspx

And I need to pick:
Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for RHEL 7.5 / CentOS 7.5
Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for RHEL 6.9 / CentOS 6.9
Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for Ubuntu 18.04
Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for Ubuntu 16.04.4
Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for SLED/SLES 12 SP3

Do I want 16.04.4 or 18.04?

I extracted 16.04.4 before using the GUI, then right clicked on "amdgpu-install" to run in terminal, when that ended and closed terminal I rebooted the syetsm...
was following this tutorial https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... tacks.aspx

I also modified a line of code to change "Ubuntu" to "linuxmint" because another almost year old post said to do that: it said line 43 for an older ver of the driver, in the one I downloaded the line was line 90...

But you are saying "pro" which, and when I search for that I find a difrent install. Is this the one I need to follow?
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... stall.aspx

Maybe the lack of SUDO is what screwed it up?

There are conflicting instructions on how to "properly" install this driver. So I am not sure which one to follow?

Also if you look at my starting post I did that old GRUB fix before I did reinstall... and it did not work.

You will want to download the drivers for ubuntu 16.04: https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... Notes.aspx

Next you will need to update your kernal for what the driver needs( and reboot after install). Sadly AMD is not stating what keranl to use. You will have to enter the Mint update tool. Click view and select kernals. Continue from the warning. Let me know what the most recent kernals are. I would likie to think the 4.15 kernal would work( baseline mint 19 is 4.15), but if you have 4.16 and higher available we have options.

My first post in the sticky, thats labeled " look here first!" , has a link to someone else walk through. you did good changing ubuntu to mint in the install package. The directions will be the same except the kernal required and the label on the driver will be different. Back when the driver was 17.10 it required kernal 4.8 or higher to install. now we have 18.20 and need a newer kernal. You have kernal 4.10 I am assuming that was your mistake and not having a high enough kernal for the driver. 4.10 is high enough to get your polaris GPU recognized, but not for a proper working driver.

Try the driver again, and see what comes of it.

Re: RX460 graphic card New install NO SOUND

Post by newbi462 »

Yes, I saw your sticky, but I will admit got a bit lost...

I see one Kernel update, it is marked as a level 4, which I tend not to do unless needed, but guess it is needed.
Packages included in this update: linux-headers-4.13.0-45 linux-headers-4.13.0-45-generic linux-image-4.13.0-45-generic linux-image-extra-4.13.0-45-generic

So looks like 4.13.0-45 is the best I can go in 18.3?

OK, so I do need to do the change the line of code?

Installing 4.13, and downloading 16.04.4 ver.

I am assuming since you and the sticky post say to do AMDGPU-PRO that I want to:
1) mod the line of code to make "ubuntu" be "linuxmint"
2) install following these instructions https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... stall.aspx

Is this correct?

Rebooted

Code: Select all

uname -r
4.13.0-45-generic
So kernel update to 4.13 seems good, but going to wait to hear back from you to double check I do the driver correctly since it bricked system last time.

1) yes
2)follow these instructions: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=242474 replace there driver with the new one.
3) 4.13 might not be high enough, but hey lets try it.
