"Could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices"

Post by fromWinToLin »

When I try to run driconf (which I have used in all previous versions of Mint to configure my Intel HD graphics), I now receive the following error message with Mint 19:
"Could not detect any configurable direct-rendering capable devices. DRIconf will be started in expert mode."
I am sure the same would apply to Ubuntu 18.04.

Does anyone else have Intel video to confirm this error happens across other systems?

However, according to inxi, my card obviously supports direct rendering.

I would like to be able to run driconf as I always have, but this random error is preventing me from doing so.

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card: Intel 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
           bus-ID: 00:02.0
           Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )
           drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ivybridge Mobile
version: 4.2 Mesa 18.0.5 Direct Render: Yes
Does anyything look out of place?

I don't know, but driconf might not work with the new modesetting driver. Earlier Mint versions used the Intel driver (xserver-xorg-video-intel) by default.

That said: don't switch back to the old Intel driver! Performance is less, and there's not much -if any- maintenance on it anymore (it's probably abandoned).

If I did the upgrade path from 18.3 ---> 19, does it automatically drop the older xserver-xorg-video-intel? How can I check if it's using the new modesetting driver by default?

The legacy driver would still be present on your system but the upgraded Mesa version ensures that the best drive for the hardware gets automatically configured. Your inxi output above confirms that.

driconf was last updated in 2006, I'm surprised it's still starting up at all.
