AMD driver

Post by ShampOo » Mon Jul 23, 2018 4:00 pm

Hey guys,

I'm completely new to Linux and kind of lost at this point. I'm trying to get a dual boot system running with Windows 10 and Mint 19 Xfce (64 bit). Problem is I can't seem to get my graphics card to work. I've been doing a lot of reading but I can't seem to get anywhere.

I have a Radeon r7 250 and according to the sticky it's neither supported by the proprietary drivers nor the open source amdgpu one anymore. It should however be supported by the preinstalled radeon open source driver. Whenever I try to boot the system I get stuck at the Xfce logo screen and all I can do is access the console by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. Nomodeset or radeon.modeset=0 allows me to at least boot but it's not a permanent solution since the aspect ratio is 4:3 and the resolution is really low. Since I don't really care about gpu performance on mint I would just use my igpu but it's deactivated by my mobo once I insert a pci-e card and there's no way in my BIOS to activate it. (I need the AMD card for Windows though, so removing it is not an option)

So I guess my questions are:
1) Is there a way to get this graphics card to work with the radeon open source driver?
2) Is the radeon driver even the default driver that is loaded on boot-up? If not, how can I enable it?
3) Any other drivers that might work or anything I haven't thought of?

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately I'd already read all of these (and many more) links before I made the thread. There appears to be a proprietary driver for a series of AMD graphics cards including mine but as your second to last link suggests some cards are no longer supported by it. Mine is one of them.

On a side note, I finally got my ipgu to work and there seem to no issues with mint. It worked out of the box. I guess I can live with a cable-switching situation even though it's not ideal.

If someone got the R7 250 to work under Tara I'd still be glad to hear.

That list of supported cards has not been updated. This article has info on the newest AMDGPU-Pro Driver and the supported video cards:
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... Notes.aspx

I tested the Radeon™ Software for Linux® version 18.20 for Ubuntu 18.04 package for my Radeon R7 240 card and it installed without any problems in Mint 19 Cinnamon.

However, I don’t know if that driver will solve your boot problem. That may be related to some hardware incompatibility.

Thanks for helping me out. Did you install the amdgpu or the amdgpu-pro one? Did you make any changes? Any boot-flags to ensure the right driver to load?

I was actually able to install both and got them to load but neither of them worked. RadeonDriver and amdgpu both got stuck at the xfce logo screen (same thing happened when I tried to install the Cinnamon version btw, just the screen was different) while with the amdgpu-pro driver the screen was completely white but still got stuck.
This does look like some hardware incompatibility, doesn't it?

update: Tried to get it running under Mint 18 but ended up with a black screen. The only difference beside the color of the screen was that I got the Update Manager working which wasn't the case with Mint 19 (everything was greyed out).

Code: Select all

inxi -Fx
in the Console window suggests that the amdgpu driver failed to load. Tried to follow another suggestion from this board where I added a '.bak' at the end of the config file for this driver but this didn't do anything either.
Bottom line is, the result is always pretty much the same no matter what driver I use. When I use my integrated GPU everything works out of the box. This is probably all I need anyway.

The amdgpu-pro driver, using this command: ./amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=legacy

After the installation, you can use this command to check that the amd kernel modules were built:
ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates/

The output will be:
amdchash.ko amdgpu.ko amdkcl.ko amdkfd.ko amd-sched.ko amdttm.ko

X.Org X Server version 1.19 is needed, which Mint 19 has but Mint 18 has version 1.18. This command needs to be used first to update Xorg: sudo apt install xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

In Update Manager, is there a linux-firmware package that has not been installed?

Try testing these kernel parameters. At the Grub boot menu, press E to edit. If no menu shows, then hold down the shift key while starting. Use the Down arrow key to go down to the line that starts with:
linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff

Press the End key to go to the end of the line. Add a space and then add the parameter: acpi=off

Press F10 to start your system. If that doesn’t help, then repeat the steps and try these parameters, one at a time:

Code: Select all

noapic
irqpoll
acpi_osi=!
acpi_osi='Windows 2009'
acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='windows 2009'
acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.

I just tried all of those steps but the only thing I got after updating the X.org X server was the xfce logo screen instead of a black screen.

With every single driver configuration and kernel parameter I've tried so far I got either the xfce logo screen, a black screen or a white screen and in every single case I could hear my graphics card fan stop during the mint loading screen, with the only exception being the nomodeset parameter, of course.

No, it says my system is up to date.

These suggestions come from a Ubuntu developer in an older Bug Report but it still may apply:

1) Log in with CTRL+ALT+F1 and issue command sudo service lightdm restart

2) Add some sleep to /etc/init/lightdm.conf

Open the file for editing by using this command: xed admin:///etc/init/lightdm.conf
Go down to the end of the file. There will be a sleep 5 line. Change the value to 10. You can also try 15.

3) Install and use GDM instead of lightdm

That applies to Ubuntu, which was using lightdm on older versions but now uses the GDM display manager. Mint 18 and 19 use lightdm but Mint 18 has the option to install the previous MDM display manager. Use the command sudo apt install mdm. There will be a configuration screen and mdm needs to be selected.

Other suggestions are:
Update the kernel to 4.15.0-29
Get an inexpensive Nvidia card like the GeForce GT 710.

No luck again.

I'll just use my igpu and connect my monitor to the graphics card in those rare occasions I actually need it. In those cases I have to use windows anyway.

Thanks again for your help.

Update:
I've been using Linux sucessfully with my Intel igpu for the past two weeks. Yesterday I had to do some CAD work on Windows so I plugged my monitor into the graphics card again. I forgot to plug it back into the motherboard's DP slot when I booted Linux today and for some reason it worked. I haven't got the slightest clue as to why it worked this time.
Perhaps this whole story can be en- or discouraging for anyone trying to run Mint with a Radeon r7 250 :lol:

Would you post the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it: xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select </> at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window.

Re: AMD driver

Post by ShampOo » Sun Aug 12, 2018 1:37 pm

Finally found out what was wrong and I feel incredibly stupid for not checking for this right at the beginning. Apparently everything was working as it should out of the box. The problem was that I had my TV connected to the graphics card as well as my monitor and the TV (which was off) was recognized as Display 1. The screen I kept seeing was actually the wallpaper of Display 2 that made up the entire screen. The white and black screens I got under certain circumstances while trying to fix this "bug" might have been actual bugs though.

I apologize for the troubles this thread caused.

update: The amdgpu-pro driver doesn't work (white screen which is not the wallpaper of Display 2) but the amdgpu driver does work as does the default Radeon driver.
