Re: mint 19 crashing after installing nvidia drivers

Post by roblm » Thu Aug 09, 2018 3:22 pm

TehMayoSauce,

This error line in the log file shows the glamoregl sub module is not loading:
[ 38.493] (EE) modeset(0): glamor initialization failed

The modesetting driver uses Glamor to provide 2D graphics rendering.

I will need to look at the full Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it: xed /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Also post the output of these commands: ls /usr/lib/xorg/modules and ls /etc/modprobe.d

Re: mint 19 crashing after installing nvidia drivers

Post by roblm » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:06 am

TehMayoSauce,

Use these commands to reinstall some packages and then logout and back in:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core ligegl1
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

If that doesn’t help, then use this method to try loading the glamoregl and dri2 modules. First use this command to create a file named glamor.conf: sudo touch /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/glamor.conf

Then use this command to open that file for editing: xed admin:////usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/glamor.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "Module"
    Load "dri2"
    Load "glamoregl"
EndSection
Log out and back in. If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then use this command to remove the glamor.conf file and reboot:
sudo rm /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/glamor.conf; reboot

If that doesn’t help, then use run a Live Session using the Mint Installation DVD/USB and copy the Xorg.0.log file to a USB drive and post it.

Re: mint 19 crashing after installing nvidia drivers

Post by roblm » Fri Aug 10, 2018 10:27 am

matiasl9815,

The output from using the ls /etc/modprobe.d command shows you had previously installed bumblebee. That should have been removed if you want to use nvidia-prime. Use this command: sudo apt purge bumblebee* primus*

If you would prefer to use bumblebee, then tell me. It still can be made to work, but some significant changes have occurred in Mint 19/Ubuntu 18.04 for configuring it.

The output from using the lspci -nnk |egrep -A3 -i "3D|VGA" command should show this, if the Nvidia driver was installed:
Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia
The output from using the ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/ command shows no Nvidia kernel modules were built.

If removing bumblebee doesn’t help, then you will need to reinstall the Nvidia driver. Use this command instead of Driver Manager: sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-340

Thank you so much everything works now :D

I tried the first two commands and that doesn't seem to work. I did notice that after running sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core ligegl1, I got the following output:

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package ligegl1
Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't return any output.

After modifying the glamor.conf file, I did not get a black screen upon logging in (so I decided not to delete it for now) but I continued to get the cinnamon has crashed message.

Here is the Xorg.0.log from my installation USB:

Re: mint 19 crashing after installing nvidia drivers

Post by roblm » Tue Aug 14, 2018 7:52 pm

There was a mistake in this command.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core ligegl1
The package ligegl1 should have been libegl1

Here is the corrected command to use:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core libegl1

This line from the log file when running a Live Session shows glamor is working:

Code: Select all

[ 18.416] (II) modeset(0): glamor initialized

User matiasl9815 has the same Intel and Nvidia graphics on his system as you do, but he did not have the glamor initialization failed problem.

Have you ever tried downloading and installing a driver from Nvidia’s website, because that will overwrite some of the Intel OpenGL files?

If using the command above does not help, then post the output of this command:

Code: Select all

ls -l /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ | egrep -i "libegl_mesa*|libglx_mesa*"

I tried the command and it's still showing the "Cinnamon has crashed" message upon logging in.

I have tried updating my nvidia drivers using drivers from their website once before. Since it would give me a black screen, I used TimeShift to restore to a point before I updated the drivers. I have also reinstalled Linux since then.

Here is the output:

Code: Select all

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       20 May 22 04:31 libEGL_mesa.so.0 -> libEGL_mesa.so.0.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 234488 May 22 04:31 libEGL_mesa.so.0.0.0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       16 May 22 04:31 libGLX_indirect.so.0 -> libGLX_mesa.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root       20 May 22 04:31 libGLX_mesa.so.0 -> libGLX_mesa.so.0.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 471640 May 22 04:31 libGLX_mesa.so.0.0.0

The only other things I can think of are some applets can cause software rendering, so you can temporarily remove them one at a time.

Also, when you log out, click the icon next to your name and check that Cinnamon (Default) is selected and not Cinnamon (Software Rendering).

I noticed that user matiasl9815 is using MATE instead of Cinnamon. Perhaps that is why he didn’t have the glamor initialization failed problem.

It doesn't appear to be related to any apps I installed.

The default option was selected on the login screen.

I decided to go into Driver Manager and switch to the nouveau drivers. Cinnamon is no longer in fallback mode. I guess a workaround is to make changes in Driver Manager and Prime when switching between nvidia and intel graphics.

Thanks for your time Rob!

You may want to try installing the nvidia-driver-390: sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-settings

If you do another reinstallation, then I suggest not installing any other programs or updates in the Update Manager until later. First install nvidia-prime and the Nvidia driver and check for no software rendering with either the Nvidia or Intel GPU. If everything is working correctly, then take a system snapshot with Timeshift.

If you still get software rendering, then install Xfce or MATE.
