Mint 19 Kaveri AMDGPU Black Screen

Post by Jeremy Johnson »

Hello Minters!

I'm running Mint 19 x64 Cinnamon on a Kaveri A8-7600 APU. The default "radeon" driver works fine, but I want to enable the "amdgpu" driver to take advantage of the performance gains discussed here: Four Years After Launch, AMD Kaveri Sees Huge Performance Boost On Linux.

However, whenever I add "radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1" in GRUB, Mint boots to a black screen. I do hear the chimes when it logs in, but don't see anything. I tried following the instructions in this thread: How to get Vulkan support on older AMD GCN cards on Mint 19 but nothing changed, except that "amdgpu" finally showed up as an unloaded driver when in "radeon" mode. On a fresh Mint install, "amdgpu" didn't even show up as an unloaded driver.

Here are various outputs while running under "radeon" that might be relevant. Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't even work while running under "amdgpu".

Code: Select all

inxi -Gx

version: 4.5 Mesa 18.2.0-devel Direct Render: Yes

Code: Select all

Any help is appreciated!

A "Kaveri is an APU. You are limited to open source only. As per the sticky.

To clarify, I am talking about using the "AMDGPU" open source driver, not the "AMDGPU-PRO" proprietary driver. The sticky doesn't make a distinction between the two open source drivers.
