Mint 19 Cinnamon keeps crashing after installing (nvidia) drivers

Post by Jango » Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:45 am

Hey guys,

After installing Mint 19 Cinnamon (+Updates), the system informed me that the software rendering mode is active and therefore no video hardware acceleration is used, possibly due to drivers.
Therefore I selected the Nvidia driver in the driver manager instead of the nouveau driver, but after a restart the message "Cinnamon just crashed" came up.

The driver I selected was called nvidia-driver-390 (the version 390.48-0ubuntu3)
I have already checked if nvidia prime is installed (yes, it is)

inxi -Fz command:

Code: Select all

I assume the crash occurs because of the graphics driver, but I don't really know.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Jango, welcome to the forums!

You have a shiny new laptop which might need a newer kernel than 4.15 to run at full potential, but first I expect you're correct about the nvidia drivers or more precisely, nouveau not getting out of the way.

Take a look at the Installation Guide for more info on that.

Cheers

Using "nouveau.noaccel=1" instead of "nomodeset" worked, no errors left, thank you :D

But I should update the kernel-version, right? I've already updated things like the kernel in the update management, so how can I get a newer version?

You might try the nvidia-396 driver, by means of the reliable graphics-drivers PPA:

I'd say, if it works don't fix it! On second look at your inxi output, you're using an i7 7700HQ cpu so it's not as 'bleeding edge' as I originally thought.

What I mean is, keep your kernel updated to the latest 4.15.x series like you've been doing, but I don't think there's a need to jump up to an unsupported 4.17 or newer kernel series.

Cheers

P.S. Following Pjotr's advice is never a bad thing!
