[SOLVED] Any way to increase resolution beyond 1920x1080?

Post by FuLl »

I have Mint 18.3 installed to a Dell Inspiron laptop with a 33" flatscreen via HDMI. The highest it'll let me set resolution is 1920x1080, but I'd like it to be higher if at all possible.

When I run xrandr it only confirms this being the highest possibility.

You can add additional resolutions with xrandr --addmode but that only makes sense if your screen actually supports those modes and is being incorrectly detected so far. An LCD panel has a fixed amount of pixels it can display.

Thanks.
I snipped everything that was irrelevant. The manual for your 33 inch screen should tell you what its highest resolution is. You need to look there first.

So I found these [1] instructions which seem easy enough. But I don't have the information to be sure that my graphics adapter & monitor can indeed do better than is detected.

It appears that something has room to improve, but I'm not sure what it is or how to interpret this information since I'm just blindly following instructions I don't understand. But there's this:

Code: Select all

xrandr | grep maximum
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32767 x 32767

Allright, so that's settled. Apparently 1920x1080 is its highest possible resolution. Marking solved.

So just blindly trust me then when I tell you that this has nothing to do with this. The screen is a software render surface. The thing standing on your desk is the output in X terminology, not the screen.
