Kernel 4.15.0-20 Work with prime (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-22 Work with prime (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-23 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-29 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-30 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-32 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-33 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-34 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-36 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-38 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-39 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-40 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)
Kernel 4.15.0-42 Black Screen (Bios set to Intel Hybrid Graphics)

When using any Kernel 4.15.0-23 and above
I am getting a Black screen when setting my bios to use hybrid graphics (optimus) on my Metabox (Clevo) P650RS laptop. Boot up shows the Linux grub menu and after that just black screen, I can blindly enter my linux Mint password and hear linux mint login chime.
I can also use recover mode in grub and boot with screen using software mode.

If I choose nvidia discrete graphics in bios i can boot using nvidia hardware driver v390, v396, v410, V415 and it all works fine. Intel graphics are disabled and not used and no prime.

My Laptop is a Metabox (Clevo) P650RS
My graphics are Intel HD Graphics 530 and nvidia GTX 1070.

<UPDATED> Found that any kernel later than 4.15.0-22 will cause Black Screen.

Code: Select all

inxi -SMCGx
Graphics: Card-1: Intel HD Graphics 530 bus-ID: 00:02.0
           Card-2: NVIDIA GP104M [GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile] bus-ID: 01:00.0
           Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.6 )
           drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.02hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)
version: 4.5 Mesa 18.0.5 Direct Render: Yes
You can try the proprietary drivers:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396
Alternatively, issue the first two commands only then run Driver Manager.

I am. I can switch prime to discrete nvidia in bios and use latest kernels,
but I want to use Intel Hybrid graphics with either intel or nvidia driver I get Black screen with kernel 4.14.0-23 or higher.
I am forced to use Kernel 4.14.0-22 when using Intel Hybrid graphics.

Ok, it's your choice.

Cheers.

My choice would be to use Intel hybrid graphics with latest Kernels.
V20 and V22 work ok but nothing later.

You might have to wait for an updated driver from Intel before it can be fixed.

I just updated my previous post after testing nvidia drivers in hybrid mode.
Prime just does not work with either intel or nvidia drivers with Kernel 4.14.0-23 or higher.
I dont game much in linux but as STEAM PLAY allows playing windows games titles in Linux would like to have Hybrid graphics working.
Ideally like Linux to work same as windows 10 for graphics.
I will keep testing Kernels as their released and keep updating this post.

You could test using the Intel driver instead of modesetting.

Use this command to create an xorg.conf file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Use this command to open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "intel"
   Driver "intel"
EndSection
Reboot and select a newer kernel.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Login and then type this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

I tried what you suggested rebooting with same kernel to check driver still showed mode-setting driver. Have seen other post asking about Intel drivers on LM19 and answer was mode-setting driver are the Intel drivers.

Code: Select all

Starting with Mint 19, the default driver for the Intel GPU is modesetting instead of intel, because there has supposedly been a lack of development with the intel driver. However, the padoka PPA, which offers the newest Xorg and mesa drivers, continues to offer the intel driver.

Use this command to check if the intel driver is installed: dpkg -l | grep -i xserver-xorg-video-intel

If there is no output, then use this command to install it: sudo apt install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-intel

Then change the xorg.conf file to this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "intel"
    BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
EndSection

Did you ever get this resolved I think you are facing a similar issue to me I ended up fixing it. Check out my thread on that. I ended up doing a clean install and opting out of installing the third party firmware. Currently running Prime switching just logging in and out works for me I just have to do the whole sudo prime-select nvidia when I am on the intel gpu.

You should be able to purge the current nvidia configuration you have on your system currently and then install the driver 396 (recommended driver for steam proton).

Also you are on the right track with your kernel take a look at this.

By firmware do you mean CPU micro code updates?
How do you opt out? can you purge them ?

I also having issue with Windows 10 (laptop dual boots) after October update, Black screen after win logo using any Intel driver except driver supplied by oem even Microsoft Intel driver or older Intel drivers that worked previously now give black screen after logo and have to repeatedly do forced shut down at login until i get recovery restart to do safe mode and reinstall original oem Intel driver.

Also launching any game causes nvidia driver to crash, Stop code:VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE nlvddmkm.sys
Even using "video driver uninstaller" to remove nvidia drivers and reinstall latest or older previous working drivers still give error.
clean install of windows builds 1803, 1709, 1703 and even 1511 still cause fault. as soon as you go online win10 updates to 1803 and includes microcode update. Latest Nov Windows 1809 (1811?) build also cause same fault.

So i also think it's a micro code update for spectre or meltdown has cause issue.
basically my $2000 gaming laptop is now just a net book :(

sorry for the Rant but its not just Linux Mint kernel updates having issues. Thanks for your reply I look into what you suggest.

This is how I installed MInt
1. Verified correct iso for my system, Verfied signature,
2. Burn iso onto a USB using the program "Etcher" in windows.
3. Turned off Fast boot and hibernation in windows, also installed O&o Shutup10 (block updates)
4. Created unclaimed partition for linux.
5. turned off secure boot (if applicable)
6. On Boot F12 select Linux mint Live USB

When you boot into the usb and then click on the CD icon to install it asks if you want to install third party software untick the box and continue with the installation (setup your partitions and what not)

Then just boot into your linux partition after the reboot and configure you're system. First thing I did was apply all updates from software manager which included the intel microcode. Then I went to driver manager and selected the nvidia driver. Now if your trying to game the driver that is recommended is:

396.54

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton ... quirements

Once the installation is complete it will request a reboot. Once you reboot the nvidia card will be default. The Nvidia prime applet should give you the option to choose the integrated GPU.

This is what worked for me, if you don't want to attempt the whole reinstall theres always the option of choosing the kernel in safe mode, booting into that and installing the nvidia driver that way.

The Nouveau driver is causing you issues I can't find the reference link but its affecting a lot of optimus systems
