I've downloaded it to my desktop but I have got no clues as how to install it. Your help would be much appreciated. My Nvidia card is a Geforce 8400 GS PCI, thanks very much.

[Assuming the downloaded file is on your desktop]
1. Close all open applications
2. Switch consoles, Ctrl+Alt+F1 (this will drop you to a full terminal), sign on with user credentials
3. Type these commands

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Code: Select all

sudo sh /home/$USER/Desktop/NVIDIA*
$USER = Your username
NVIDIA* = hit Tab after NVIDIA to autocomplete the package name.
4. Go through the dialog, allow it to overwrite your xorg.conf
5. You should be back to the terminal prompt, type

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
GDM login screen will start, using the nvidia drivers for display.

Well, It seems to be working but still did not fix my inability to enable desktop extra effects. Oh, well.

Ok, this is what was outputted (yes i'm a redneck)

"Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Blacklisted PCIID '8086:2562' found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity"

I should mention that I had to reset up my computer because the newest driver installation was constantly crashing my computer. So, I'm back to using the v.180 restricted driver that is the current recommended by the system. The above quoted output is using the v.180 driver.

you know i have no tried this method many many times with different versions of linux and on every single one it refuses to work. i get the error.

sh: can't open /home/usr/desktop/Nvidia
(yes i typed the full file name as well.)
nothing has worked for me. i am running out of ideas at the moment. these drivers are very much needed as i do gaming as well as movie editing. i have tried the "recommended" driver and it does not work very well at all. please if anyone has anymore suggests i would be very greatful
