Linux mint mate 19 update caused grub infinite loop - nvidia driver

Post by hgoody22 »

I have been having a lot of problems install linux on my new machine as it comes with a Nvidia MX150 geforce driver. I installed linux mint mate 19 and this seemed to hold and do the trick by adding "nomodeset" to the grub file.

However, I then ran an update and now whenever I try to select linux mint (dual booted with windows 10) from the grub menu the screen goes black for a minute then shows the grub menu again.

When I go on advanced options and select the .20 version the system loads just fine.

I am sure that this is again a problem with the nvidia driver, and so I was wondering whether there is a solution to either rollback the update or if anyone could let me know how to make the updated system work?

The results of "inxi Fxz" are:

welll if it's really the nvidia driver you can do what i've been doing.

sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*

the nvidia drivers and chipsets are a plague...i wonder if radeon is any better...
