nvidia driver installed but won't load SOLVED
my apt-get installs have all gone perfectly. i'm using
system is consistent.
no errors on installations.
and after i reboot.
no nvidia driver.
strangely nouveau and i915 are showing up even though i'm one of the many people who seem to have to use nouveau.modeset=0 on the kernel parameters line or the machine won't boot (that's not fixed yet ? really ??)
i have no idea how to force the driver to be installed.
Any ideas ?
Thanks !

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
I had the same problem months ago. Although nvidia was selected in Driver Manager, nouveau was always loading. Try this in Terminal to avoid it:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
Search GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT, after "quiet splash" add "modprobe.blacklist=nouveau"
Save file and exit
sudo update-grub
Restart
Open Terminal, type "lsmod | grep nouveau". It should return no results.
Hope it helps.

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
Thanks very much for your help.
nouveau is not loading. it looks to me like the i915 driver still is, but that makes sense since i have onboard i915
i'm wondering if that is preventing the nvidia driver from getting loaded.
it's so frustrating. everything appears to be set up correctly but it just won't load.
absolutely nothing in the dmesg log about the nvidia driver either.

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
You can try deactivating internal Intel graphic card in the bios of your machine. It should also have an option to set which card is main and which card is secondary...

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
i think the mods censored one of my posts which was not conveyed in the nicest tone.
or i just forgot to hit submit.
I actually did get the driver to finally load and what happened ?
i lost X-windows. at least it didn't lock up the machine.
linux on a laptop is still very problematic.
i've given up. I've always had trouble with nvidia drivers, how they ever got the reputation of having "good" drivers i'll never know, probably because everybody else was worse.
it's possible that i could make it work by going back a few revs. i did have it working a while back but my upgrade to mint 19 borked everything.
ah well. i live to waste time in my life. i guess i'll try going back a couple of revs on the nvidia driver and see what happens.

i've never seen that choice in a bios.Arrababiski wrote: ⤴Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:50 am You can try deactivating internal Intel graphic card in the bios of your machine. It should also have an option to set which card is main and which card is secondary...
might be that it's limited to desktops or something.
well i did get the nvidia driver to load and it looks like the i915 driver is in there too. i strongly suspect x-windows is confused.
however i went and looked at the log files and dmesg and no errors.
just no... display manager either.
very weird.

Yes, the "disable internal vga" option is usual in desktops, but may not be in laptops.caracal478 wrote: ⤴Wed Oct 10, 2018 12:57 ami've never seen that choice in a bios.Arrababiski wrote: ⤴Tue Oct 09, 2018 2:50 am You can try deactivating internal Intel graphic card in the bios of your machine. If there's no display manager, you can restore last snapshot made with timeshift in less than five minutes...
What was your last step before the display manager disappear? Can you undo it?

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
yes all is well.
i have to do
apt-get purge nvidia*
from vt1 whenever i get the stalled display manager, i.e. every single time i've installed nvidia so far.
you know. it used to work.

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
caracal478,
In your first post, after installing the Nvidia driver, it appears that you were able to get to the desktop.
1. If you can do that again, or use Timeshift to go back to that time, then post the output of using these commands:
2. What is the full version number of the Nvidia driver listed in Driver Manager?
3. Also post the Xorg.0.log file. Use this command to open it:
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select </> at the top. Press Ctrl+V to paste the copied lines into a code display window.
If you have problems posting that long file, then it can be uploaded to pastebin. First use this command to install pastebinit:
Then use this command to upload the file:
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
Well once i load the driver i can get back to a VT which is how i purge the nvidia drivers. In your first post, after installing the Nvidia driver, it appears that you were able to get to the desktop.

But, no, I cannot get to any graphical desktop of any sort. I don't even get to the login screen.
regardless i re-installed the driver and got the info.

i've also included an output of lspci. You'll see that after the X log, i posted a snippet from my dmesg.
i don't believe they are related, as i get those errors whether or not the nvidia drivers are loaded.

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
Did you get that file in the virtual terminal or after purging the Nvidia driver in the VT and rebooting.
i installed the nvidia driver and rebooted.
the login screen does not come up.
i ctrl-alt-F1 get to the VT and ran all the commands you listed.
so the X.org file is the one i captured with nvidia "installed" , but of course i copied over while inthe VT, which should make no difference.
so if there is no nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf or nvidia-kms.conf files then that's because they didn't get installed properly or at all
now you understand my confusion. i can't find any errors, but it just doesn't work...
so maybe we should focus on why i don't have the right files in modprobe.d ?

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
ok. tried installation again and checked X.org.0.log again, and still no errors. as far as i can tell lightdm log looks the same regardless of which driver, so this is most likely an X problem.
it's just so weird that it doesn't work and yet doesn't throw any errors.
i'm still fairly convinced the existence of the i915 driver is part of the problem, and yet X says it's loading the nvidia driver and it's happy...
i included a listing of all the modules too

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
I forgot that you have an Optimus laptop. Is there an option in the BIOS to select Discrete Graphics or Hybrid Graphics? It appears that Discrete Graphics has been selected because the Xorg.0.log files don’t list the modesetting driver, which drives the Intel GPU.
I see you tested the parameter nvidia_drm.modeset=0 on the kernel command line and also are blacklisting nouveau on that line, so the nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file isn’t needed.
There is an existing xorg.conf file. Open the file with this command and post the output:

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
i have an MSI laptop.
there is no bios setting for graphics card selection.
when i do apt-get purge *nvidia* that does not update the xorg.conf file.
interestingly ,with the wrong file, i.e. file calling for the nvidia driver, X still works.
Therefore this is the xorg.conf file that is present when i install the nvidia driver.
the other funny thing is that NOW there is an error in the X.log file because it's requesting an nvidia driver and there's no to be found.
but as i said, X still works.
so it works when there is an error in the log file.
and doesn't work when there are no errors.
lol

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
The xorg.conf file is the source of your problem. It’s not needed in Mint 19 for your hybrid graphics setup and is configured incorrectly. Use this command to remove it:
Did you create it using the command:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Did you create it using the command:
sudo nvidia-xconfig

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
i didn't create it, the installation creates it. it says right at the top of the file
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
so is the installer buggy, or is there something else going on ?
what exactly is configured incorrectly ?

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
You didn’t say if you removed the file and the problem was solved.
There was a significant change on how GPU switching was executed in Ubuntu 18.04/Mint 19 and one change was that the xorg.conf file was not used. Below is a correctly configured file for Mint 17 and 18:
That line can be seen whether the file was created automatically or manually, but the file should not have been created automatically during the Nvidia driver installation. If it was, then it’s a misconfiguration. However, if you download the Nvidia driver from Nvidia’s website, then you will be asked if you want the file created during the installation; but again, it’s not needed. In Mint 17 and 18, there was a special xorg.conf file created automatically for Optimus laptops when switching to the Nvidia GPU and removed when switching back to the Intel GPU.caracal478 wrote:i didn't create it, the installation creates it. it says right at the top of the file

Re: nvidia driver installed but won't load
you. are. a. genius !
that fixed the problem.
[edit: to be more specific, removing xorg.conf.]
that's just infuriating. how could the file be misconfigured and yet not actually generate any errors in any of the log files ?!
There's one caveat to this. When i got back into the system driver 410 was ready, so I used 410 instead of 396. it's possible that 396 didn't work, but given that there weren't actually any HW problems, that's probably not the case.
Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it.
