Problems with Mint 17.3 and Nvidia GTX 1050 [SOLVED]

Post by martasanz34 »

Hi,
I got a new computer, an ASUS GL503VD-GZ359T with an integrated Intel card and a Nvidia GTX 1050 card. I tried to install linux mint versions 19 and 18 from a bootable USB, but I was unable, as I could hear the sound linux makes when it starts but I could see nothing.
Finally, I was able to install Mint 17.3. After the log in I get a message "Executing in software rendering mode:Cinnamon is being executed without hardware video acceleration, and there could be a higher CPU use than usual. There could be a problem with your drivers or any other problem. For an optimal working, it is recommended to use this mode only for troubleshooting"The problem now is that I can only get a screen resolution of 600x800.

I tried to install the drivers recommended for my card from Nvidia page (410.66 version), but after rebooting I get a message saying that cinnamon got a fatal error and it's in recovery mode and it must be restarted. The same happened when I followed this tutorial :
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/12
I've also tried to use the nouveau drivers getting the "executing in software rendering mode" message again. Any idea of what I can do?
This is what inxi -Fxznr returns, in case it can help.

EDITED: The problem was solved by the OP by installing Ubuntu, so you're wasting your time reading this topic.

Was the Nvidia driver downloaded from Nvidia’s website?

Where did you purchase the laptop; was it from some foreign store’s website?

What is the output of using this command: mokutil --sb-state

Hi, roblm, thanks for your help;
roblm wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 3:41 pm Where did you purchase the laptop; was it from some foreign stores’s website?
I'm from Spain, so I bought the computer in a quite famous Spanish store.
roblm wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 3:41 pm Was the Nvidia driver downloaded from Nvidia’s website?
Regarding the Nvidia driver 410.66, yes, I downloaded it from the Nvidia webpage, (I had tried before version 384 from the Driver manager and it didn't work). After the error message appeared, I uninstalled it and installed version 410.66 from PPA graphics-drivers, with the same result.
roblm wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 3:41 pm What is the output of using this command: mokutil --sb-state
The output is

Code: Select all

SecureBoot disabled
I disabled it before booting from the installation USB.
Any clue about What might be happening?

Installing the Nvidia driver from Nvidia’s website for your laptop with hybrid graphics (intel+nvidia) is only OK if you plan on only using the Nvidia GPU. If won’t work correctly if you switch to the Intel GPU, because that particular Nvidia driver installation will overwrite the Intel OpenGL libraries.

I suggest removing the Nvidia driver in the virtual console tty1 by adding a space and then --uninstall to the Nvidia driver .run file. If you answered YES to having an xorg.conf file created during the installation, then you need to answer YES during the uninstallation when asked if you want that file removed. Finally, you will need to remove the nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf using this command: sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf

Then use this command to update the initial ramdisk and reboot: sudo update-initramfs -u; reboot

When you get to the desktop, post the outout of these commands:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
ls /etc/X11
ls /etc/modprobe.d
How did you remove the nvidia-384 and nvidia-driver-410 drivers before installing the downloaded Nvidia driver or did you even try removing them?

You also have the option of doing a re-installation.

I was aware of this, I've had a laptop with hybrid graphic card before and I used Bumblebee and primus. Every time I upgraded to a newer distribution it took several days trying to fix the graphics. This time , I thought it would be easier to work just with the nvidia, since I use linux mostly to run programs which require high rendering power.

I had already done this part

I did a

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
before installing anything new

What do you mean? Reinstalling again the Nvidia drivers or the linux distro?

Reinstall Mint. Mint 17 is only supported until 2019. You were not able to boot the Mint Installation USB for Mint 18 and 19. Did you see the Welcome screen with the menu? If yes, diid you try the suggestions in these Release Notes:
https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_tara_cinnamon.php

Try using nomodeset first and then try these steps if that fails:
Try with "nouveau.noaccel=1" instead of "nomodeset".
Try with "noapic noacpi nosplash irqpoll" instead of "quiet splash".
Use the "Compatibility mode" to boot and install Linux Mint.
I will add to those options but first go into the BIOS and check if there is a setting named VT-d. It should be enabled. Then try using the parameters noacpi nolapic

What was the error message and did you get a black screen or were you able to get to the desktop?

Vt -d is enabled in the bios. These are the results I get:
-Regular installation :black screen after linux sign with the green dots dancing
-"nomodeset": I get letters, and then black screen.
-"nouveau.noaccel=1”: letters and then black screen.
-"noapic noacpi nosplash irqpoll": letters and then black screen.
.compatibility mode: letters and then a black screen

With "noveau.noaccel=1","noapic noacpi nosplash irqpoll" and compatibility mode, if I plug a screen via HDMI I can see letters even though without it the laptop screen had turned black.
Letters basically say " watchdog: BUG: soft lockup-CPU#(a number) stuck for 22s!
roblm wrote: Sun Oct 21, 2018 8:49 am What was the error message and did you get a black screen or were you able to get to the desktop?
The error message was :cinnamon has recovered from a fatal error and it's in recovery mode and it must be restarted. I was able to get to the desktop, but a very weird one, without the menu and everything in a different place.

You didn’t mention that you tried using the noacpi nolapic parameters, but try it out because nolapic only lets one CPU core run.

Sorry I thought it was a part of the long line you used before, I didn't realize there was a difference.
Now,I've used them and in the laptop screen it turns black, in the HDMI plugged screen the last line you can read is "Started Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness or backlight:intel_backlight." Then, it does nothing, the screen continues like that for minutes. :(

This was supposed to be added to my previous post:

Was the icon for installing Mint still visible, and if it was, did you try clicking it to start the installation?

Sorry, but I think we are mixing things up. When I could see the weird desktop was when I had Nvidia 410.66 drivers installed in version 17.3( the one I was able to install but not make the graphics work fine), not trying to install version 19.

Try usning these parameters with the Mint 18 or 19 Installation USB:
noacpi nolapic acpi_osi=Linux and noacpi nolapic acpi_osi=Linux vga=733

If that doesn’t help and you want to continue troubleshooting why Mint 18 and 19 won’t install, then I suggest starting a new topic in the Installation & Boot forum.

If you want to continue with the existing Mint 17.3 installation, then try installing the nvidia-384 driver again in the Terminal:
sudo apt install nvidia-prime nvidia-prime-applet nvidia-384 nvidia-settings

Reboot and at the GRUB boot menu select the correct line but don’t press Enter. Press the “E” key to edit. If no menu shows, then hold down the shift key while starting. Use the Down arrow key to go down to the line that starts with:
linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff

Go to the end of the line. Add a space and then add this kernel parameter: nomodeset

Press F10 to start your system. If that doesn’t help, then reboot and repeat the steps using these parameters:
nomodeset noacpi pci=nomsi and acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2009'

If that doesn’t help, then try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the virtual console tty1. Use these commands, which will send the output to .txt files in your Home directory:

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia > dpkg.txt
ls /etc/modprobe.d > modprobe.txt
dmesg > dmesg.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > xorg.txt
To get to the desktop, use this command to switch to the Intel GPU and reboot: sudo prime-select intel; reboot

Post the output of the 4 .txt files and also post the output of this command:
ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm

I thinkI prefer to have first 17.3 version running. If then I can install a newer version, great, but I need the computer for work and I want to have at least something as soon as possible.

None of them worked. In all three cases I could enter the weird linux desktop and I got a message saying:serious internal error. In recovery mode. Reboot cinnamon?

Use this command: ls /etc/X11

You should see one or more files that start with xorg.conf and have a date added at the end; for example: xorg.conf10212018

Open each file and post the output; for example: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf10212018

Also, you forgot to add the underscores after acpi for this parameter, which I now notice are easy to miss:
acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2009'

The log file shows this line:

Code: Select all

[ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-32-generic root=UUID=1671b33b-67cf-47d4-b1aa-59bf7467484c ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 acpi osi=! acpi "osi=Windows 2009"

I'd swear I put it, but maybe I missed it. In case it affects the logs, here are the new ones after using the right command:
dmesg: I attach the file because it's longer than the limit of characters allowed

You should see one or more files that start with xorg.conf and have a date added at the end; for example: xorg.conf10212018

Open each file and post the output; for example: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf10212018

Code: Select all

marta@marta-GL503VD ~ $ ls /etc/X11

Re: Problems with Mint 17.3 and Nvidia GTX 1050

A special xorg.conf file is supposed to be created after selecting the Nvidia GPU. If that doesn’t happen, then the Nvidia driver will not load. The gpu-manager is responsible for creating that file but the log file showed it’s not being created, so the gpu-manager needs to be disabled.

Use this command to create an xorg.conf file: gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the opened empty file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
    Option "AccelMethod" "None"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1@0:0:0"
    Option "ConstrainCursor" "off"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
    Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT"
EndSection

Then open the grub file: gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Change this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

To this, to disable the gpu-manager:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nogpumanager"

Use this command to update grub: sudo update-grub

Use this command to switch to the Nvidia GPU and reboot: sudo prime-select nvidia; reboot

If you can't get back to the desktop, then enter the virtual console tty1 by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Use this command to open the grub file: sudo nano -t /etc/default/grub

Remove the word nogpumanager. Press Ctrl+X to save and exit.

Use this command to update grub: sudo update-grub

Use this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

It happened as you said. I was unable to open the desktop and I had to remove the file. I'm starting to look like your avatar.

Existen 3 opciones para la alternativa x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf (que provee /etc/ld.so.conf.d/x86_64-linux-gnu_GL.conf).

  1 /usr/lib/nvidia-384-prime/ld.so.conf 8603 modo manual
* 2            /usr/lib/nvidia-384/ld.so.conf              8604      modo manual
  3 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/ld.so.conf 500 modo manual

Pulse <Intro> para mantener el valor por omisión [*] o pulse un número de selección:

I don't know if this can help or just make things worse, but I've noticed that the Intel card doesn't even appear in the driver manager. Just the Nvidia with the two drivers options (Nouveau and nvidia-384)

That xorg.conf file you used was from Mint 18. I just found a related Nvidia Optimus topic I was involved in from Mint 17 and the xorg.conf file is different by one line. You need to go back 4 posts and follow the instructions again, but use these lines for the file:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "nvidia"
    Inactive "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    Driver "modesetting"
    BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "intel"
    Device "intel"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1@0:0:0"
    Option "ConstrainCursor" "off"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
    Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT"
EndSection

If that doesn’t work again, use this command in the virtual console tty1 to get the output of the Xorg.0.log file, which will be sent to your Home directory: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > xorg3.txt

I won't be back online again until tomorrow.
