Mobility Radeon HD 545v (Mint 19)

Post by MB4E » Tue Oct 23, 2018 6:28 am

Hello, I'm trying to get a Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon working solution on a laptop with graphic card Mobility Radeon HD 545v.

At the time of installation, I have to select the compatibility mode otherwise I have no display. The installation goes well but when restarting, I get a black screen displaying only the mouse pointer.

From a a console, I installed the amdgpu-pro 18.30 drivers (for ubuntu 18.04). The result allows me to access a cinnamon session, but only in software rendering. Since, I can't get the hardware rendering.

That video card is a 4xx series and about 10 years old, I don't think ampgpu-pro is the right driver for it at all. If you look at the list of supported cards here ...

https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articl ... Notes.aspx

... I don't think you'll find any cards that old there. The ubuntu wiki for the amdgpu driver says "No HD 6000 or prior cards will be supported" and I don't think amdgpu-pro will be any different. Trying to use the newest driver on old hardware in Linux is a common beginner mistake, this ain't Windows.

Actually your best bet with old hardware is probably Mint 18.3, and this isn't Mint or Ubuntu's fault. Support for old hardware is being cut from the kernel pretty fast. You'll be stuck with the radeon driver in any case.

BTW if you do do a data backup and clean reinstall of 18.3, which I think would be best, don't use the Cinnamon version. Use Mate of Xfce, they're more suited for old hardware with weak graphics. I think Mate is a better sorted DE than Xfce myself. Just do NOT install more than one DE, it's a great way to break your OS.

Thanks for your help, I will try to install Mint 18.3 !
So yes, it's old hardware, but I never had such problem with intel or nvidia products.

I've had issues with both AMD and Intel video.
