If it's having an issue with the driver, shall I try updating it with one of these https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads ? I'm presming it's not that simple hehehe
You could try a different kernel, both the latest one (4.19 mainline) and an older one (4.4). Easiest for now may be to flash a LM18 installation image and boot to that and see how it goes.

Something else you could try is to switch your BIOS to UEFI mode (currently it's in legacy mode) and see if you can boot the LM19 live environment with that without having to change the boot options (you won't be able to boot your regular install like that, it has to be the live environment).

You could also try some other kernel options like acpi=off, which can help in case a bad BIOS is the reason.

For anything else we'd need to know what's wrong, i.e. see some log files.

Glad you are back up and running.

You shouldn't have to mess with drivers with 2nd generation Intel HD graphics. I'm at a loss as to why your machine won't boot normally.

I've got similar hardware albeit its legacy boot only and a much older BIOS which has run fine on all the Mint 18.x's and now Mint 19 on all kernels from 4.4 to 4.15.

Give gm10's suggestions a try.

My inxi for reference.

I've tried 18.3 originaly as well as Ubuntu and the results were the same booting into a live USB version.

When I tried UEFI before it gave the same results, I tried that when troubleshooting before I added the modeset.

Another thing I did when troubleshooting originally was to update to the latest BIOS, which was successful but also heralded the same result before I added the modeset.

If I try i915.modeset=1 instead of zero, would this force the internal graphics to be loaded sooner instead of using software rendering?

For log files, shall I follow https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-log ... ogs-files/

Thank you for the inxi reference file.

It's really strange as Windows 10 was working OK on this machine, as was Windows 7 before it.

I mentioned above, what if I change the modeset to 1, do you think that will help?

modeset=1 is the default, i.e. you will blackscreen with that. try the acpi=off noapic instead. It probably won't do a thing but can't hurt to quickly try it so we know.

For logs, I think only /var/log/kern.log will help here.

PS: Here's the 4.19 kernel, I'd also try that, maybe it's a bug that has been fixed in the meantime, you never know:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 09_all.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... _amd64.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... _amd64.deb
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... _amd64.deb

Download all of them somewhere, open a terminal window in that folder then run this to install:

Code: Select all

apt deb linux*

I really appreciate both your help, thank you.

Shall I replace

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i915.modeset=0"
with

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=off noapic"
or is that in addition to, I've googled it and cant see a reference regarding using one or other or both sorry.

I'll give that a go first then I need to get some sleep as early work tomorrow! Once back I can try the kernal updates you suggested.

Thanks again.

I meant instead of the modeset option, we're still looking for a way for you to boot without that. Same for the kernel, you should see if you can boot it without the modeset parameter.

If you were here in front of me now I would kiss you!!! 5 days I've been trying to either get live boot to work and then to get rid of rendering mode and that has fixed it.

Plus the screen resoltution is much clearer too.

I have just quickly read about Advanced Configuration and Power Interface which is now off, and that in Windows it can cause issues but Linux is kind of OK. Is there something that I need to fix now or is this the fix and the laptop will run at optimal performance with not long/short term issues?

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you

Ah, nice, that's slightly unexpected but good news, glad I insisted. As I said, it never hurts to try the easy options first. :)

When you have a moment try with just one of the parameters to see which one did it, and then we can get to fine-tuning it rather than just disabling it completely. There's a whole world of options available: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/ ... meters.txt - but we can do that another day. ;)

Thank you. I'm guessing I can't leave it like it as when I just tried to Shutdown it would just flick to the Mint logo (like it does when it boots) and I have to hold the power button to switch it off.

Also I noticed in the resource manager that only one CPU was showing where as before it was all cores.

But I guess it's a move in the right direction. I need to log off now but hopefully someone can help tweak it so it's working a little more closer to perfect haha

Yes, shutting both things off was just to quickly identify where the problem lies, side-effects due to that were expected. We can now hopefully find a way to address the issue with a more fine-tuned solution that does not have those side-effects.

Thank you smurphos, both your help has been much appreaciated.

I ended up not being able to sleep last night and got up and did a little more research much to my wifes disgust!

I found https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI and ran through the debugging procedure

Bios is up to date - Check

Used the following in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="<HERE>"

acpi=off - worked
acpi=ht - did not work
pci=noacp - did not work
acpi=noirq - did not work
pnpacpi=off - did not work
noapic - did not work
nolapic - worked - battery status shows/ shutdown OK - Only one core showing and it's quite laggy

I did some searching on other people that had this issue and used some of the recommendations from previous issues that others have had:

intel_pstate=no_hwp - did not work
intel_iommu=on - did not work
acpi_backlight=vendor - did not work

It can't be a hardware issue as Windows 10 worked perfectly fine and dandy with the CPU running with no problems.

For logs if you think they will be helpful do I supply them with nolapic in the GRUB command, does it record it logs without? /var/log/kern.log

Actually it's mostly a log without any of the options that would be interesting. Maybe set apic=verbose for some more info though.

I won't have time to look over this today. Some more options to blindly try (instead of the others) in the meantime:

Code: Select all

lapic=notscdeadline
or

Code: Select all

acpi=rsdt

No worries at all, I appreciate the free help, I'm not going to complain!

Neither of the below worked:

Code: Select all

lapic=notscdeadline

Code: Select all

acpi=rsdt
I'm slightly confused regarding the log to be honest. If I try and add anything to the GRUB command that doesn't allow Mint to boot then it doesn't record in the log. For instance when adding apic=verbose it then didn't boot and nothing was recorded in kern.log until I then added back nolapic , then when I checked the log all loading parameters were recorded.

Here is the log with nolapic but presume that doesn't help much (I had to split it over two posts due to char limit).

Code: Select all

Re: i915.modeset=0 - Stuck in Running Software Rendering Mode

Post by thun0r » Sun Nov 04, 2018 5:02 pm

To recap the only commands at the moment that allow me to boot is

i915.modeset=0 - Which turns off my grpahics driver and uses software rendering
acpi=off - Disables the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
nolapic - Disables the Local Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller and turns off the multi-processor

I'm confused as to why I've gone from disabling the onboard graphics which allows it to boot to stop using all cores. If this was a hardware issue surely Windows would have been flaky? I've tried a few other distros today in live mode and they all just reboot before loading up completely, I even tried Kali too which only booted in safemode but then the wireless didn't work.

I'm thinking that I may have to stick W10 back on this thing and sell it, then get myself another laptop for Mint that will work!

Thank you again.

My bad, you should look at

Code: Select all

/var/log/kern.log.1
to get the logs from previous boots including one that failed (i.e. with only the apic=verbose parameter).

But based on your existing logs, try

Code: Select all

pci=nocrs
or

Code: Select all

acpi_os_name="Linux"
and unrelated to the logs, try this:

Code: Select all

acpi_apic_instance=2
I'm sorry it's still a bit trial and error but we haven't gotten an exact error message yet so I'm just seeing what sticks. By the way, please also check your BIOS/UEFI parameters regarding anything ACPI/APIC related, there may be something that that needs changing.

And yes, it's entirely possible the system works differently under Linux than it does under Windows.

Those three commands didnt work, same results.

I don't have /var/log/kern.log.1

Looking at the BIOS there is nothing in there for ACPOI/APIC setting.

I've read that other people that bought this laptop had Mint running straight out of the box. Booting from USB into live and also installing, no issues! Could it be that there is a fault with this Thinkpad X220? I mean if it wont even boot a live USB version of ANY distro I've tried, just a black screen each time.

I don't want to waste more of your time and I'm thinking that I will just put W10 back on, stick it back on Ebay and buy another Laptop similar in specs and price.

I think the fault is most likely with the specific BIOS/UEFI version, not the device as such. If you've got the option try to downgrade it to a previous version, but often they don't allow downgrades. Otherwise, simply flipping it for another one certainly seems like the easiest option.
