Flickering Screen Black Lines

Post by Steerpike21 »

Hello!

Apologies in advance but I'm not technically savvy. My friend always installs Linux on my laptops for me as I like the safety of Linux and I want to support Linux, but because he's been in another country for a couple of years now, my system is out of date, and I mostly just deal with problems as they come up. Any and all help with this is appreciated.

My current issue is that today my laptop screen started flickering with black lines. I've found posts complaining of similar issues, but wasn't confident enough to try messing with graphics drivers in the terminal without being sure of my own computer's specs.

Here's my computer information, pulled from the terminal:

It's odd that this is just happening today/now, as I haven't updated my system in a very long time, and in the past issues have only cropped up when I've downloaded a new version of something.

Any and all help is appreciated, and I apologize for being so ignorant. I figured I would ask the experts before messing something up. D:

This is not an image of my computer, but it's also done this twice today:

My gut feel is that if it was working okay before, it's probably a hardware problem. Had a problem with a T410 thinkpad a few years back - vertical black lines on the screen. Bought a second hand screen off ebay.

Have a search on the web and see if others have had the same problem, and/or join the thinkpad forum and ask a question there.

does it happen when you are in bios? try a live mint or other live linux, connect to the internet surf a little and watch some youtube. if it happens in bios or in live mode, the laptop screen is going bad
