Color profiles have no effect

Post by richardm317 »

Both of my monitors are displaying oversaturated colors. Adding or changing color profiles doesn't appear to do anything. Do color profiles need a reboot in order to take effect?

Rebooting accomplished nothing.

I need to ask:
  • How did you generate your monitor color profile?
  • What software did you attempt to use to load the monitor profile?
Color profiles I use were generated using an open-source hardware product called ColorHUG that I purchased a number of years ago. To generate a useful monitor profile, first one needs to set the monitor to, for lack of a better term, manufacturer neutral. Then generate the profile using the hardware/software combination of your choice.

Then, I've successfully used dispcalgui to load monitor profiles in just about every GNU/Linux distribution I've ever tried, LM being no exception.

I'm trying several of the in-box profiles that ship with Mint 19. I'm not doing any video or photo editing nor do I watch movies on this system so I don't really need high accuracy. I just want to dial down the saturation a little. I'd be happy if I could get a color saturation slider or even a numeric adjustment that I could tweak a little. Right now my basic entry-level monitors on Mint 19 almost resemble wide gamut monitors on Windows 7. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this -- my setup is totally vanilla from top to bottom so I would think that others with this common hardware would have the same issue. :|

I have an older Spyder (Spyder 3, maybe a 4) in the closet somewhere. It appears to have linux support so I'll dig it out and see if I can accomplish anything.

I've installed DisplayCAL. Launched it for the very first time and it applied my profiles at startup! Now I just need to figure out which profile I want to use. Between the bundled ICCs and the Mint in-box ICCs there's a lot to choose from...

Do you have gnome-color-manager installed? I had to install that package in order to be able to use colour profiles.

It's installed. I think it's part of the base installation?

Edit: So I've wound up with BestRGB on one monitor and BruceRGB on the other and this looks pretty good. The Mint in-box profile chooser works in real time with some of these profiles but others don't seem to apply. I think I'll dig out my Spyder and give it a spin. I was using it under Windows and I hated the software it came with so much that I wrote it off. DispcalGUI looks promising.

Hello,

I am not new to Linux Mint but new to color profiles. I had a very similar issue, changing the color profile took no effect - most of the time.
I accidentally found one profile called D55 which did take effect so I compared it with the ones that didn't.
I found that the ones that work have a tab called VCGT in the Color Profile Viewer. The non-working ones don't have this tab.
Then I also looked at colormgr:

Code: Select all

colormgr get-profiles
. The working profiles have a

Code: Select all

Gamma Table: Yes
entry. Don't ask me what it means, I have no clue. :)
So finally I started to google for new profiles and I found this site. - here I found a lot of profiles with this VCGT thing.
